If you are new to dreams and dreamwork, there are a few lists where Electric Dreams people seems to congregate. One is dreamchatters@yahoogroups.com Subscribe by sending to: dreamchatters-subscribe@yahoogroups.com .. and another is the IASD bulletin board. Please, no dreams interpreted here, just discussion of dreaming and dreamwork topics. http://www.asdreams.org/subidxdiscussionsbboard.htm I just wanted to let ED readers know that I am now working at the office for the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD). If this starts to produce a conflict of interest with the free speech policy in Electric Dreams, I will hand the Editorial functions of ED over one of our volunteer staff. However, I plan to continue keeping ED as a free speech forum for dreamworkers, as long as speeches are related to dreams and dreaming. If you feel I'm over-promoting IASD let me know. I plan to follow our general precedent of providing support to all dream organizations, and that often includes IASD news items of interest to the general dreamworking community. Accordingly, if you have any questions or concerns and send them to me, be clear if you do or don't want your comments published. This month in Electric Dreams: Dreamwork pioneer, Patricia Garfield, Ph.D., explores the dark closets of dreams and fantasy in her dream poem, THE MONSTER(La Bête Noire). From LDE editor Lucy Gillis: "Beginning with issue number 32, LDE[Lucid Dream Exchange] was very pleased to include Quarterly Lucid Dreaming Challenges, hosted by Ed Kellogg. In each issue, Ed provides a challenge for LDE readers to attempt, if they wish, and suggestions to help them accomplish the task. Readers are encouraged to share their results with LDE. " The challenge this month is how to use dreams and alternative universes to contact and join hands with your optimal self to help optimize your life. Be sure to read this Excerpt From the Lucid Dream Exchange : "Tuning into Your Optimal Self/Branching Parallel Universes" a "Lucid Dreaming Beyond Time and Space" Task from E. W. Kellogg III, Ph.D. It's been a widely held view that dreams can help us understand what we are repressing. If this is true, one of the most repressed of desires is our desire to fly. Linda Lane Magallón (author of "Mutual Dreaming") explores this topic more deeply in "Flying In Poetry and Prose." Jean Campbell founded the World Dream Peace Bridge to allow people to join together to dream about subjects for particular goals in the world. This month she discusses how one very useful aspect of sharing dreams with an international group of dreamers is the variety of perspectives available on any given subject. Be sure to read all about this in the View From the Bridge. Strephon Kaplan-Williams is a dreamwork pioneer who has been involved in multi-cultural environments since his work in the 1970's. The article here in ED draws on this experience, and discusses how much of Anglo European dreamwork often sees itself as the center of the dream universe, when in fact dreamwork has always been more popular in other cultures. Be sure to read "Reply to Anthony Shafton's 'Why So Few Blacks in the Dream Movement?' " In response to Robert Waggoner's Dream Residents article last month [ED 12(2)], dream explorer pasQuale sent in some of the experiments taking place at this online Lucid Dream Community and Lab. The primary issue for Waggoner is the status of our dream characters, are they OURS or do they have some claim to autonomous freedom and separate existence? pasQuale's community explores this more in "Testing the 'Realness' of DC's. (Dream Characters)" Janet Garrett, who keeps up the wonderful collection of Electric Dreams articles, continues adding older issues to the collection. These articles contain a wide range of information for dreamers and dreamworkers. You can see her work progress and view hundreds of article on dreams at: http://www.improverse.com/ed-articles/index.htm Harry Bosma has collected dream news, web updates, conference announcement and other events in the world of dreaming and you can read about those below in the Global Dreaming News. In each issue, Ed provides a challenge for LDE readers to attempt, if they wish, and suggestions to help them accomplish the task. Readers are encouraged to share their results with LDE. Here is the first Lucid Dreaming Challenge. Why not give it a try and see what happens? *********************** LDE Quarterly Lucid Dreaming Challenge September, 2004 by Ed Kellogg (This new feature provides an unusual lucid dreaming task for LDE readers with each new issue. Participants agree to accept personal responsibility and all risks should they choose to undertake these tasks, which may possibly bring about mental, emotional, and even physical changes. We invite those of you who attempt these tasks to send your dream reports to LDE.) "Lucid Dreaming Beyond Time and Space" Task ((c)2004 E. W. Kellogg III, Ph.D.) Tuning into Your Optimal Self/Branching Parallel Universes Consider the idea that in some parallel reality another "you" made a different set of choices, so that they became your optimal self, the self actualizing your highest potentials. Your task: to tune into that alternate optimal self and their life through your dreams, either by dreaming about the life you would have lived had you made the necessary choices, or by directly contacting your optimal self in a lucid dream. For example, you might look for a dream mirror (or any other reflective surface, like a pool of water, or a polished metal surface) and use it as a scrying tool to show you your alternate self by chanting "Mirror, mirror that I see, / Show my optimal self to me!". Record your experiences and / or the information that you get in your dream journal in as much detail as possible - use illustrations to depict your experiences if appropriate. Also, look for the appearance of alternate selves or parallel universes in all of your dreams. Often, after rehearsing lucid dreaming tasks before you go to sleep, relevant information will show up even in your "ordinary" dreams - even when you do not succeed in becoming lucid. Preparation: Step 1. Background reading: Those of you who seem unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the concepts of parallel universes and parallel selves, would do well to check out Dr. Max Tegmark's article on the scientific evidence for parallel universes, published in the May 2003 issue of The Scientific American. Dr. Tegmark's article begins: "Is there a copy of you reading this article? A person who is not you but who lives on a planet called Earth, with misty mountains, fertile fields and sprawling cities, in a solar system with eight other planets? The life of this person has been identical to yours in every respect. But perhaps he or she now decides to put down this article without finishing it, while you read on. The idea of such an alter ego seems strange and implausible, but it looks as if we will just have to live with it, because it is supported by astronomical observations. . . . " Also, those of you who would like to explore similar concepts from a more metaphysical point of view might find the discussion of "probable realities" and of "possible selves" in Jane Roberts' book Seth Speaks (chapters 15 - 17) fascinating and illuminating. Taken together, an open minded reading of Tegmark and Roberts should help you to get a better idea of multiverse in which we may all live, and to facilitate the task by allowing your "common sense self" to let go of limiting consensus trance beliefs that might stand in the way of success. Related Links: http://www.hep.upenn.edu/~max/multiverse.pdf http://brassringbooks.com/rchange/rcperm.htm#Physics Step 2. Defining your Optimal Self Success in tasks of this kind depends in large part upon the lucid dreamer's ability to focus on specific goals. In order for you to connect with your "optimal self", you need to first define - in some detail - those characteristics that you consider the most important. Most people would include optimal health, but not everyone cares if their optimal self can play the piano like a virtuoso, do back flips like an Olympic gymnast, or play chess like a grand master! I suggest that you come up with at least the six most important characteristics that would define your optimal self before attempting this lucid dreaming task. Remember to include those characteristics that matter the most to you, regardless of what others might think. These can include anything - mental, emotional, physical, and even spiritual characteristics as well as learned skills. OPTIMAL SELF: Core Values (Please fill in at least your top 6) 1. (Health) 5. 2. 6. 3. 7. 4. 8. Appendix: An inspirational example from "Michael", a lucid dreamer who accomplished this task. 3/29/04 "After slipping through several dreamscapes after taking galantamine at 2 a.m., I experienced myself as totally lucid and aware in the dream version of my apartment....... at that point I remembered the dream task, and decided to find my optimal self by spinning all the electrons in my dream body 178 degrees in order to create a door into the optimal alternate reality where I would find my optimal self. I trusted my dream self,(in the dream) to know how to do this in the dream state, having practiced it in (real life) many times. I then picked up my magic dream wand which has a counterpart in my real apartment, a double-ended crystal wand made of wood, and made seven counterclockwise ellipses to create the door..... The door appeared... (appearing as a vertical slit in the dreamscape that I was in, and I stepped through)..... I then found myself outside a house on a porch accompanied by a woman. I did not recognize her, but she was present throughout the dream as an observer. Upon turning around on the porch, I saw a male figure, and walked up to him and asked if he knew why I was there. He replied that he knew, and I replied that I was on a task to meet my optimal self . (An interesting suggestion by Ed Kellogg that I might switch bodies with my optimal self morphed into the idea that I should steal it)......... This was stopped by a set of dream morals, and I simply asked my other self if he would mind giving me some healthy DNA to replace my defective DNA having to do with Bamboo Spine. My optimal self said he did not mind extracting some, which he proceeded to do. Once in hand, my dream self remembered that some of the fastest repairing cells in the body were in the lips, so I took the DNA and inserted it into the lips with a needle-like inserter, adding the instructions to create migratory cells to take it to the spine. Upon completing this action, I asked my optimal self if I could merge with him to absorb energy and information that would help my progress, and he allowed it. After absorbing what I needed, I thanked him and stepped back through the slit into what appeared to be my dream reality and found myself lucid in my bed again..... At that point, I experienced another lucid dream where I traveled to the house of my lucid dream teacher, Ed Kellogg, who is a friend. and entered his house, went down the hallway toward his room, and attempted to enter his room...... I was unable to do this, as there was a barrier that I couldn't get through, so, at that point, I experienced a less lucid dream where I saw a brick being put into place in a garden and then saw a sink being cleaned from the perspective of the cleaner... at that point, I was fading from lucidity and awoke without other dreams to report............................." Comment: Michael has a condition known as ankylosing spondylitis, a condition characterized by a fused spine, normally accompanied by a great deal of pain. Since accomplishing this dream task on 3/29/04, he has noticed significant improvements both in his range of pain free movement, as well as in overall spinal flexibility. He now has some limited flexibility in the entire spine, and has also experienced improvement in vertebral adjustments. Aside from these physical improvements, Michael reports improvements in telepathy and in energy mastery. ******************************** The Lucid Dream Exchange is a quarterly newsletter featuring lucid dreams and lucid dream related articles and interviews. But someone within still remembers that primal yearning to reach for the skies. Leonardo Da Vinci agreed. He said, "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward; for there you have been, and there you long to return." The dreamer who flies is starborn. What is this yearning, longing That calls from infinity? What quasar pulses endlessly Pitched to my inner rhythms? Hope quivers Desires sunthrob The winds of space flow through me Playing on the strings of my being. >From whence do they come? Where do I go To meet them? Surrounded soundless I question Who am I? The sensual feeling of being a creature with fluttering feathers is indescribable in words, though I have felt it in dreams. Since I've never grown wings in waking life, how can this be? Through empathic imagination, that's how. There's a red-talked hawks' nest visible at the top of a eucalyptus tree in the property behind mine. Watching the hawks gliding the invisible waves of wind is a favorite source of imagery. Wishing I were they provides the emotional link to their form of flight. I am a secret fledgling. I throw my desire into the boundless regions of air and, like an arrow; it flies directly into the heart of my dreams. If you were a bird, and lived on high, You'd lean on the wind when the wind came by, You'd say to the wind when it took you away: "That's where I wanted to go today!" Once I had a dream in which I was flying round and round in circles just above the stalks in a cornfield. Other flyers were doing the same thing. Flitting about like invisible sprites, we were all making crop circles - for no other reason than, it was fun. Most flyers like flying dreams simply because they're fun. And, some of them are. But flying spans the entire range from agony to ecstasy, thus providing the full range of expression for the emotional self. It can be a frightened flight, fleeing the nightmare. It can be a peak experience, an emotional "high," living at the pleasure of the wind. I have flown in patterns of geometric beauty or whirling color, in the depth of darkness and in phosphorescent light. But I can also float in the midst of nothingness where there is no color, no light, no "I." Just existence. There can be feelings of euphoria, bliss, satisfaction, realization, knowingness, religious awe or love. The main purpose of flying is the sheer joy of the escape from gravity, not the destination. Dancing is flying high an energy rush body and soul ecstatically united Free form, like birds playing warm breezes swooping, diving erratic thrusts Breathing deeply sweating profusely moving effortlessly Butterflies fly, and dance petal to petal move over honey bee Dance your dream fly high The famous "Ah ha!" experience is an emotional high. It comes from suddenly seeing the bigger picture. Flying is an "Ah ha!" experience all by itself, which means there is often no need to "interpret" it in traditional terms. We can if we want to, but I think we might be missing the point. Flying is a verb, not a noun, a happening, not a written language or frozen symbol. I believe we don't get the meaning and significance of flying just by talking about it. We fully "get" it only when we do it. We cannot catch the wind in a net. Nor keep flight in a cage of words. Some words are steeds with silver wings. Some words will never fly: They plod, poor grubby earthbound things, And never reach the sky. But if winged words you chance to see, Steal up and clamber on - And with the poem suddenly Go soaring to the sun. Do you know what the most popular flying myth is? Not Pegasus, that's for sure. It's Myth of Icarus. It's told as a cautionary tale: don't reach too high or you're bound to fall. But you the pathways of the sky Found first, and tasted heavenly springs, Unfettered as the lark that sings, And knew strange raptures, - though we sigh, "Poor Icarus!" Well, yeah, I agree, it doesn't pay to be stupid. But I've always found it curious. It's never told as the tale of Daedelus. The tale of the clever one with the sharp mind and right attitude and emotional maturity and clear conscience who actually got all the way to his destination. Oh, no. We're supposed to focus on the empty glass, not the full one. Fortunately, that's a myth from the past, and we aren't chained to the past. Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly. It's a constant challenge for the flyer to overcome the Kryptonite forces of amnesia, conformity and mundane thinking which do not permit the spirit to soar freely. It is a trial of strength to overcome the gravity of those forces. But dream flying can actually strengthen the psyche. It helps keep the mind flexible, promoting resilience and even courage. Because the flyer has choice and flexibility, flying supports the belief in free will, rather than fate. Flying provides opportunity for flexibility and freedom, expanded perception and exploration of dream space. When we learn to balance of the currents of dream, we can ride them, not fall into the deep ocean of atmosphere. Let brisker youths their active nerves prepare Fit their light silken wings and skim the buxom air To take appropriate risks on your hero's journey requires a clear perspective. From the heights we can hover and view virtual life as though peering down from a glass-bottomed boat though a crystal sea to see the sights on the ocean floor below. From the air, life is put into new patterns and glazed over with serenity. With a wider, clearer view of situations, new options for dealing with problems become available. Because flying is an expansion of perception, a wide view provides us with a better sense of overall direction and destiny. With a beautiful, magnificent view, it seems we can see forever. Sometimes we fly to Tucson, Sometimes we fly with friends, Sometimes we soar in two on, The hope that our wings will mend. But any way our compass turns, North, West, up or down I always fly alone quite best, When others are around. Flying can take us places. Above the geometry of the land, the symmetry of the sea. Seeing strings of jeweled islands and undulating hills and sights so hidden from earth view that pedestrians know them only as dim tales from distant lands. Swiftly, I've been to sacred sites like Stonehenge in my dreams. Or inside a space ship, warping through time travel, on my way to a past life. Or to the far ends of the galaxy, swooping past the planets, utterly unlost in the universe of the self. Flying allows me to travel beyond shallow shadowland and to the depths of the void and the breadth of infinity. The flyer breaks each second into new, uncharted territory, traveling beyond the habitual dream world, broadening the mind. The very act of flying is transformational magic, absorbing our restless side and leaving contentment or awe in its stead. Through flying, we embody the spirit of being one with something larger than ourselves. Throw your dream into space like a kite, and you do not know what it will bring back... So, let's blow the lid off the creative glass ceiling - to soar above the limits of mundane, waking ego constraints to the heights of magical dream life. This month, for example, following the DaFuMu Dream for World Peace on February 15th, May wrote: "I noticed that my dreams of late are much less tranquil. I used to dream much more of outdoor places, especially about water. That is almost all gone and I miss them. I connect nature dreams with introspection and being in tune with oneself.... I would like to find a medium ground where I can both act upon my inner energy as well as going into tranquility sometimes. Does activism and compassion always have to be agitating?" It is undoubtedly true that focusing on Peace, provides a focus on the lack of Peace that so much of the world suffers; yet May also sent this dream and the note following it after the DaFuMu dreaming: WEAPONS ON DISPLAY It is just an image I see on a well laid-out, long table, as in an exhibit. It is covered with either a white or a red table cloth. On this table are rifles or whatever you call those long ones, and a few pistols. They look clean and shining, being displayed for show. I am just passing by, not paying much attention to it. EOD "Then, this morning, I got a brief post from Ali." May said. "He is already in Amman, Jordan, and had already talked to Mazen on the phone. The plan I made for them (!) is they can go shopping for the Iraqi children. I'm sure they will. "I was concerned for Ali and his colleagues driving down to Jordan. He told me it is still dangerous. As in my dream, guns were lying down. He even said he enjoyed the ride! He sounded so relieved. I am too. "You see, dreams ARE useful." Baomei The international flavor of the dreaming permeated the DaFuMu. Dreams from three other members of the group also contained transoceanic (transworld?) views. Olivia wrote from England: DREAM OF SPANISH ENGINEERS I sit with a group of Spanish Engineers, men in their upper twenties. We sit around a low table, informally. One of them speaks of the group's aid project, he speaks English. He then proceeds to translate for one of the others, and I say I understand some Spanish. I immediately wish I hadn't, my Spanish, I realise, has all but gone for lack of use, and this man speaks fast, in what seems a flat, urban accent, omitting syllables and letters all the way. I somehow get that he gives me the engineering spiel of the project - which would likely not have meant much to me in plain English, even! When he has finished they all look at me, waiting for what I can offer. I feel terribly embarrassed, and begin, almost falteringly, to tell them that I belong to this group... I fish around for the words... World... Dreams... (try to say that in a dream! - Makes me think the other communication came across telepathically.) "...Peace Bridge", the first man fills in for me. They have seen it on the web. I think I say something about them getting in touch... Valley, who lives in Texas, but is part of an international community there, sent this dream: WHIRLING BEAUTY AND DIVINE MADNESS I am dreaming I am standing in my bedroom and looking out my window into my backyard. I see small purple flowers blowing in the wind and I am fascinated by the beautiful, unusual flowers and how many of them are blowing dancing in the wind outside my window. Then from the distance blowing toward me I see a large White Magnolia Flower that is open all the way. It blows into my window and bangs loudly startling me in my dream. I become awake and realize I am dreaming. I then find myself in an intimate dream with my partner Hadi. He is discussing with me how I am human and of course I have physical needs. After this intimate interlude I am looking for him and I cannot find him. He is in a restaurant called The Cosmic Cafe. He has foam coming out of one of his eyes. It is a form of divine madness one gets after seeing god. He goes to the owner of The Cosmic Cafe and asks him if there is a cure for this. Praveen, the owner, tells him there is no cure and he has got it too. The chef in the kitchen of The Cosmic Cafe has also got it. There is no cure for this divine madness. EOD "I wake from this dream with a strong sense of loss," Valley comments, "especially from the magnolia flower. It stays with me all day, making me feel heartbroken and extremely vulnerable. The dream feels like it is about loss and greiving of something beautiful. It also had a feeling of the presence of god, and of passing on or of some kind of spiritual transition. The divine madness seems to be about not being able to fully make the transition, to be caught in transition.... "In terms of the world the white magnolia flower is about Peace and the loss of that flower. It is in full bloom It reminds me of when the Iraq war started on the first day of spring.... "There was one more peson in the kitchen, who also had this divine madness. I don't know who he is or what country he is from, but something is cooking in the kitchen." From Australia, Kathy sent the following dream: "Dear everyone," she said. "I did dream on the 15th. It doesn't seem like a mandala of peace dream, but it is. HUNTING FOR WHAT I KNOW I HAVE I see this lady lying on a great ball. She has on a diaphanous gold-yellow dress with thin shoulder straps and a beautiful rose made of the same material. I'm looking for the material. I know I have to make the undershift of a green satin. I see wonderful material on a spool, all sorts of exotic silks shot with colours. But I'm intent on finding this simple green satin. EOD "The green and gold colours signify 'new home' to me. They've been in my dreams for a long time associated with 'Villa Nova'. But green as the undergarment also reminds me of the green of compassion (which is I guess the companion to the negative expression of the same energy: green for envy), the energy of recognizing others. NOW somehow this seems connected to the discussion of Dr Ali and the money. To give a gift is an enormously difficult thing to do. To receive a gift is equally difficult... "For to me such difficulties can be solved with compassion. BUT HOW? That will come as we pay attention to the dreams and to our awarness....YES RETURN TO DREAMS - tonight I will dream to open my heart in this context." Being on the Peace Bridge though is not entirely about dreams. It is also about just noticing the differences in our respective worlds. A week after the DaFuMu dreaming, Kotaro wrote from Tokyo that the Spring Wind had begun to blow: "Kochi fukaba nioi okoseyo Ume no hana aruji nashi tote Haru na wasureso. "'When the EAST WIND blows, you, the flowers of plum, must give the parfume and don't forget the Spring even though I, your master, am not there. (ancient song).' Here , Kochi means the East Wind." And Kathy returned: "Ale wa kochi no kereina name desu. Welcome Kochi!! "In Australia (northern part/east coast anyway) we are waiting and waiting for the rains to come! We should have had a wet season by now to end the hot, sweltering, humid summer days. No real rain yet. No rain last year either. I think we are in the down cycle of the El Nino. If so, this will continue for a few years. NOT good. Australia is a pretty dry land! "To all of you welcoming Spring, hello from the land where we are waiting for rain and the beginning of cooler months (which some from the edges of the world like to call autumn!!)." ----------- o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o Reply to Anthony Shafton's "Why So Few Blacks in the Dream Movement?" By Strephon Kaplan-Williams o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o To comment on the above article, Why So Few Blacks in the Dream Movement? I would have to suggest that the title itself is misleading. First, Shafton assumes I think that the dream movement is centered around ASD, and around whites, but even this is fallacious thinking. In terms of individuals interested in dreams and dreamwork I don't see that the broad categories, black and white, apply. Among those of African origin I have known as a Berkeley, California dreamworker in the sixties, seventies and eighties, conducting as many as seven dream groups a week, I never found that being of African origin made a difference, or united all of African origin in any way. Nor did I find that among the whites I worked with that there was anything universal in being of lighter skin color. So, trying to put millions of people into the general categories of black and white, and drawing conclusions, such as in this article, does not work for me in my experience or in my ability to think through issues. Let me illustrate. I have had people of African genetic origin in my dream groups. But also of Spanish genetic origin, Mexican genetic origin, Jewish genetic origin, Catholic, Chiristian, non-religious, wealthy, poor and so on. I have had women in my dream groups, and men. I have had homosexuals and lesbians and non-sexuals in my dream groups. I have had students and professionals and family people, mothers, housewives and so on. Am I then to ask why there are not more mothers in my dream groups, or homosexuals, and so on? Each of these sub-groups are minorities when placed in opposition to the rest of the members called dream group members. Categorizing blacks and whites, Jews and gentiles and so on, I consider a form of prejudice. For the categories do not hold and therefore are based on labeling others, a subjective way of viewing people. So if I viewed by numbers blacks and whites in my dream groups then I would see far fewer blacks in the groups. But the same would happen if I saw the two categories as homosexuals versus non-homosexuals. Why are there not more homosexuals in the dreamwork movement than there are? What a wonderful speculation. Not really. My fundamental position has always been to see people as persons. I of course looked for cultural differences but I did not find any of these influences as clearly definable or crucial. I have had whites who have had murdered family members and blacks who have had murdered family members. Many have not had murdered family members. A number of dream group members have been raped, as well as suffered other types of violence. All have wanted and needed help in how to problem-solve life issues. Using the method, Following the Dream Ego, it is fairly easy to see that in many people's dreams they are not effective as problem solvers so this is one area we focus on. If your racial or cultural influence is important to you in terms of self-identity, then we deal with this as it shows up in dreams. In this objective and functional approach we use the dream as the primary focus. We problem-solve. We look at the conflicts and inadequacies in the dreams and work at new ways and solutions for handling these problems which apply to dream life and to waking life. We don't worry about cultural or racial issues. We deal with the problem. I would be far more concerned about the different approaches to doing dreamwork with the dream. I have just stated that one strong emphasis in doing the functional approach to dreamwork is teaching problem-solving. What then are other dreamworkers teaching in relating to dreams? I don't know, frankly, and would like to. Sticking to our focus on dreams seems the best. Why create problems impossible to solve? Strephon Kaplan-Williams Strephon Kaplan-Williams had his Jungian-Senoi Dreamwork Institute in Berkeley, California from 1977 to 1988. This area was a multi-cultural environment. The experiences of his students have been written up by him in the Jungian-Senoi Dreamwork Manual and in the later Dreamworking - A Comprehensive Guide to Working with Dreams. http://www.dreamwork2000.com/ o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o Testing the 'Realness' of DC's. (Dream Characters) by pasQuale o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o DC = Dream Character SG - Spirit Guide SD = Shared DreamGate LD = Lucid Dream Essay of experiment conducted in the LD4all lucid laboratory ( http://forum.ld4all.com ) It all began with this theory: A dream is just a different world, and your DC's can be real people. So, not just your subconscious... An extended theory is that there are different kinds of DC's. 1. made up by your subconscious and symbolize something. 2. real ppl (shared dreaming) 3. spiritual beings like spirit guides. 4. ? To find this out the experiment was started: So to learn more about DC's let's interview them. As explora has pointed out, it is important what you ask and how you ask it. If you don't get an answer first time, try rephrasing the question and ask again. Here are some questions to get you started but you can make up your own interview. I want to know if you are real(1) or a product of my imagination(2) (1)-Do you live on earth right now? (If so: ask for name, birthday, password, things like that.) (2)-what do you symbolize then/ why do you appear in this form in my dream? ask on, like: - how did you end up here in my dream, do you symbolize something? - where do you come from then? - from another dimension? - from another planet? - from another 'plane'? - are you a spirit guide? - what's your name? - do you always appear like this? - have i seen you before in another shape/form? - can we meet again? (how, where) remember, the purpose of this experiment is to find out more about the DC you are interviewing and in particular if he/she is real or part of your imagination. So that should be the first thing you want to find out. _________________ The results: As each participant encountered and questioned the DC's we found out that indeed there are different kinds of DC's. And that DC's are made up by your subconscious as well as 'real' DC's. With 'real' i mean: a seperate entity not made up by you. As the experiment went on we found out that by asking directly if a DC is a product of your subconscious gives a clear 'yes' or 'no'. We also discovered another category "Dreamgods" who seem to be very powerful beings. As each participant encountered and questioned the DC's we found out there are different kinds of DC's. Some answers could be quite surprising. One participant was shown a graph in her dream with a list of different levels of DC's. pasQuale wrote: I had a dream in which i was shown a piece of paper with notes on it, it was like some kind of graph and looked a bit like this: 1. | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7| 8| 9(?) | in it where descriptions, and it was like everything followed on each other, like every number a new level above the previous. it read: 1. Normal DC 2. group DC ? (can't remember) 3. ? 4. SG 5. Group SG 7. SG teacher 8. group teacher 9 high teacher (?) ----- I now proceed with the findings so far, with some quotes from participant's dreams to illustrate. All dreams can be found in the thread part I and II. 1 = DC's made up by your subconscious. Mostly, these are thee ones that look at you blankly, walk away from you or just give nonsense replies. These DC's can feel 'hollow' - as if they are mere shadows or projections. tomas wrote: This time dcs would only repeat the question i asked, like some mindless zombies... TimeLess_Soul wrote: To me a DC can feel hollow; sorta like a picture, you just kinda feel them as part of your self or at least that is what i get. However, if asking them the right question, they can offer valuable advice. Learjet wrote: I come across 2 young girls one about 3 or 4 and one a little older. Asking each one what they would like to tell me one said "I would like some food" she did mention exactly what but I can't remember now. Maybe it was a jam tart or something with jam or cream in it anyway. Having 2 responses now with food it wasn't hard to see a pattern emerging. You see I went back to sleep instead of getting up and having something to eat - I was hungry. These DC's can also be controlled by you in a LD: pasQuale wrote: I tried this out with one of the non responding DC's. I willed him to walk in a certain direction or do movements and indeed, he was like a puppet on a string, very funny 2='shared DC' These aren't made up by your subconscious, but aren't 'real' either. They seem to pick up certain energies and from there appear as a DC. pasQuale wrote: one DC remains. I ask him who he is. He answers: today i'm jack, candy, jill and ivy. (names like that, can't remember correct names, but there where four) i say what's that with you DC's and all those names? this is the 3rd time i meet someone like you. What's the story on those names, how does that work? (...) The thing i remember about it that it had something to do with soul energy the DC picks up to apppear in that particular form in your dream. pasQuale wrote: then i meet a DC who says: No, i'm not part of your subconscious. I say: really? then how did you end up in my dream then? he looks at me with an attitude like: "what a stupid question. I could tell you but you ould never understand, if you even have to ask this question. pasQuale wrote: In the dream i asked the question: are you a product from my subconscious to a lot of DC's. One told me 'no' or 'partly' (cannot remember clearly). He said: well, this action i did by myself, but when i turned like that it was you who did that. (something like that - meaning: some of his actions where controlled by me and others he did of his own) 3= shared dream. Participants recall DC's who stated that they where dreaming and they were real. Alas those DC's disappeared soon after that or could never been verified as being shared dreams. (giving passwords etc, or shared DC didn't remember dream IRL) Dreamwalker wrote: One was a girl who told me that she was real and she was dreaming. I then told her I was dreaming. she vanished. TimeLess_Soul wrote: I look at the old woman and say something long the lines of "are you real or are you created by my subconscious?" she looks at me. she knew this was coming. she speaks in a powerful voice " i am real dear" TimeLess_Soul wrote: i had taken my jacket off as it wasn't cold anymore inside my dream. she said" arnt you cold without a jacket?" i said "nope" she was still in a dream with snow and saw me in a shirt in the cold. not smart i saw her in a heavy jacket in the warm air. i held her around the waist and she seemed to sorta come into my dream. ( hard to explain). i teleport to a different dream area and lose lucidity but still have some degree of awareness. 4= deceased / spirits This one hovers between SG and SD but deserves a seperate category. DC's have been encountered who say they have passed away. pasQuale wrote: I say to her: i want to know if you are a real person or that you are made up by my subconscious. she says: well, i'm real I (happy): really? So, are you, shall i say, living on earth right now? (to know if this is a shared dream or not) she: no, i'm a spiritual being. 5 = spirit guides. Now this is a tricky one. As explora's dream illustrates, SG's can take on forms of ppl you know IRL. explora wrote: I once met my dad in a lucid dream. But this was different. He was helping me with controlling my dream! i was a bit surprised!! I said, 'Now, you're not my dad are you?'.. 'No, I'm not' 'Are you some kind of spirit guide?' 'Yes' 'So do guides often use the images of people who are close to us?' 'Yes. They're like our number plates for identification' 6. dream teachers. Dream teachers are what the name implies: teachers. They teach you things in your dream. It can be about anything. The dreams with DT's in them often take place in a setting with some kind of blackboard where things are explained or some kind of instructional area like a classroom. 7. Watchers These still remain elusive.... 8. dream Gods. These seem to be the most powerful DC's. TimeLess_Soul wrote: Another group of beings that i have met call themselves the dream gods, they are creatures that hold power over the dream world much like lucidity but a lot more of it. On my time that i have met with them i feel from them just lucidity all over, total control is what they emit. --- conclusion so far: indeed, there are many kinds of DC's. The problem is that DC's can lie also. They will say they are your SG while in fact they are not. It is now clear that indeed there are DC's made up from your subconscious and 'Real' DC's. But it has turned out that there are different categories/levels of 'Real' DC's. This is an interesting area to explore. In most cases the 'real' DC's will tell you that they are real when you ask them if they are real or made up by your subconscious. The experiment continues! We are curious to meet the Watchers, the DreamGods and the Dream Teachers. What can they tell us? Who are they? --- As a bonus some interesting information given by DC's in the participant's dreams: Quote: "The auto-conscious is like the subconscious. Every feeling, thought, words, and image from the auto-conscious is stored in the subconscious. DC's use those to appear". Quote: We dream in the mind, but we are all connected, what you believe is happening happens. if something isn't with you it isn't part of your dream. Your dream was cold, mine was warm. In your dream there was snow and i didn't have a jacket on. In mine it was warm and normal for me to go without. It wasnt with me, that is why it is still cold" Quote: Not last night but a little while ago can't remember the date i asked a DC why they were here and they told me "to keep you from eing lonely". They have given me this answer twice now. Quote: "Together we make the dream come into being" (something like that). I was standing in front of him with this big shot gun. I remember he was crying telling me "Why are you doing this to me?" Then I shot him and I woke up just crying! Dream comments: none Dream title: My Baby girl Blues Dream date: 1/28/05 Dreamer name: EC Dream text: I was sitting on the sofa and my partner was smiling at me and a doctor walked over to me and handed me this cute adorable newborn baby. The doctor said "Congratulations Jackie". I smiled and held out my arms. I looked at the doctor whom I have never seen in my whole entire life. I looked at the baby and it was wearing this cute jean overalls pants and a baby white t-shirt but had ruffles on the overalls. I replied to the doctor, "It's a boy isn't it?" I said that because I have 3 boys and no girls. And the doctor replied "No, Jackie it's a girl!" First thing that popped in my head was the abortion I had before my last child. I have had surgery to not have any more children after my last boy. I held that baby girl so tight and cried and cried. I woke up crying. Dream comments: I am still crying about the dream when I think about it because that baby I had before my youngest, (the one I aborted) could have been the baby girl that I've always wanted. I held that baby so tight I didn't want to let go. I'm crying as I write this dream to you right now. Dream title: Dying fish Dream date: 1/28/05 Dreamer name: WW Dream text: I'm walking with a fish bowl and I'm am pouring fresh water in it. All the sudden the water starts to turn green, and I can hear the fish dying and gasping for air. I frantically try to save the fish but it jumps out of the bowl. It is bleeding and it dies on a piece of white paper. I then bury it; I put it in a coffin and buried it like you would a human. Dream comments: I was confused as to why the fish was dying and I was scared when I saw the dead fish Dream title: Racing Dream date: 4/25/04 Dreamer name: YA Dream text: I'm running through a town made of stone and there is no one there but there is someone behind me with the meanest look on their face. I run faster and faster and they can't catch me then I trip. I fall on the ground and can't get up. Then this person catches up with me and I scream so loud and no one comes out of the houses to see what's wrong. Dream comments: I woke up before this dream ended so I have no comments about it. Dream title: Stabbing attacker Dream date: 1-27-05 Dreamer name: 2nd time Dream text: My first dream, there was a blonde lady in a blue dress trying to get in my patio door. She was looking at my front door. A blonde, tall, thin man uses a key to open my front door and comes in; I attack him with a large knife when I stab him. He doesn't fall down. I drive the knife through his heart and twist it, to make sure he was dead. The second dream a few days later, a man was attacking a relative. I also stabbed him in the leg and foot, but this didn't stop his attack. Dream comments: Dream title: First kiss Dream date: 11/1/99 Dreamer name: LL Dream text: I was at my school and I was just leaving because we had a game. I was walking down the long hallway and I heard some guy say my name. I was almost to the door and the he pulled my arm turned me around and he kissed me. The kiss really sucked. I turned around and said you wasted my first kiss. He said "I didn't waste mine." I understood how he was so saying it was better for him because I am a good kisser. Dream comments: I really am a good kisser Dream title: My obsession Dream date: 1/26/05 Dreamer name: KS Dream text: I had a dream about the famous Kevin Heart From Soul Plane and we were making out on this bed. This girl walked in and sat on the bed while he was laying on top of me. We were kissing and we were talking. I asked him if he would take me to my prom and he said yes. Dream comments: no comments Dream title: A Vampire's Victim Dream date: 1-19-05 Dreamer name: MB Dream text: I'm lying on a black velvet couch in a room well-lit by white candles. I'm unconscious at the beginning, but by when I come to, I look up and there is a vampire getting ready to feed on me. The thing about this vampire is that it's me, but at the same time the victim is me. Dream comments: I've been reading a lot of Ann Rice lately Dream title: The horse and goat Dream date: 1/24/05 Dreamer name: anonymous Dream text: I went up my horse that was in the stable and I found my two best mates there. As I walked into the stable, my horse had turned into a goat. I did not see it at first but then I realized that it was not my horse. In fact, it was one of the farm goats that lives on the island of grass at the stables Dream comments: none Dream title: The man Dream date: 1/22/05 Dreamer name: M Dream text: I had these dreams a lot when I was little. In fact my mom broke her nose because I screamed so loud. First he's chasing me and I can't really make out his face and then he pushes me up against the wall and pulls out a knife and I scream and wake up. Dream comments: When I'm awake, I feel someone beside me and it's him and he's blue and under the covers and I screamed. The strange thing is that part wasn't in the dream I was really awake and that's what really scares me. Dream title: To know the fact of my life Dream date: 02/02/05 Dreamer name: JN Dream text: I saw myself having sex with one of my family friends who is going to marry me in the dream. He is building his new house where he plans to keep me. I see my kids who are minors playing near a railway track where trains passes but my kids survive. Dream comments: I am very much unhappy about my dreams as this dream makes me unhealthy and stressful. Dream title: none Dream date: 2/2/05 Dreamer name: anonymous Dream text: I had a dream about my boyfriend and I having two kids: a boy and a girl. My little girl was sick Dream comments: what does this mean? Dream title: the weirdest thing ever Dream date: none given Dreamer name: wt Dream text: It starts out at this house me and my dad bought. I'm 15, and we are this party and everything is fine. My dad and his friends are outside and I am up in the attic. This girl tells me that there is a robber downstairs shooting everyone and to stay up here. Next thing I know I am sitting on the floor while this man is sitting in this chair. My dad comes up behind him and shoots and kills him. My dad and I leave and drive away. The next day at school I run into the high school hotty. He asks if I like him and I say yes. We go to the library in class and he is in there. He helps me with my homework and then he takes me to next door to this hotel/restaurant and buys me cereal and orange juice. It costs 400 dollars. Then we go to kiss and this gun fires and I wake up. Dream comments: What is going on? It was so scary! Dream title: recurring nightmare Dream date: 1/4-7/05 Dreamer name: My Dream text: The dream always started out the same we (my boyfriend and I) are walking along the beach. I am in my 4th term of pregnancy and the waves gently crashing along the beach. The sky is bluer than polished glass and clearer as well. No clouds except on the horizon. All of a sudden the sky turns from blue to red and the water turns black. I'm scared and cling to my boyfriend, as a tornado-like thing comes sweeping down. It carries him off, knocking me out flat on the sand. I apparently wake up and I'm not on the beach anymore. I'm on a cloud-like thing and it was black as the water. My clothes were replaced with a once white dress (it's cut in certain parts around the hem and bloody around the middle). Then this monster comes out from a wooden door and holds a scalpel. He presses this button and my wrists and ankles are hooked to the cloud thing. He walks over and starts cutting on my abdomen, like doctors would if they were giving a C-section. I'm just lying there, not doing anything. I don't feel the pain at all while he's cutting me. Then he's holding this little thing in his hand and turns away. He presses the button again my ankles and wrists to unlock them and he walks out of the room. He does not look back or anything. I look down and there are stitches in my stomach area. I faint and when I wake up again. I'm on the beach with my boyfriend, like nothing happened. But there was one difference...I was wearing the dress with the blood stains and cuttings and my stomach was flat. Dream comments: I was pregnant in the beginning of the year but I lost it two days after I had this dream. Dream title: My unborn baby Dream date: A couple times a week Dreamer name: JG Dream text: A couple times a week, I will have this dream that I give birth to a baby boy. It's always a boy, he always looks the same, and he always has the same name. Sometimes the childbirth is painful and sometimes I don't feel it. The dream seems so real that when I wake up I'm not sure if it's true or not. In the dream I am very attached to my baby, but soon after I have him (and we are in the process of leaving the hospital to go home) someone takes my baby. I let someone hold him and then he is gone. When I wake up I miss this baby like I really gave birth to him. Dream comments: I've never had any children in real life. I'm 22 and I just got married. I love children and can't wait to have them but I'm scared now because I'm afraid someone will take my baby away. I don't know why the baby is always a boy and I don't know why I have this dream so often. It's a great mystery to me. Dream title: Car wreck Dream date: 2/1/05 Dreamer name: Crazy Dream text: I had a dream that Iven and Orlando, two of my close friends at college, were in a terrible car accident. Iven and I were a lot closer to each other than Orlando. Iven died in the car crash and Orlando was okay. Dream comments: I was also talking in my sleep saying, "Where is O, where is my poor Orlando". Dream title: I saw a lady climbing mango tree, and pick a fruit Dream date: 2/11/2005 Dreamer name: Ml Dream text: I was swimming in a river, with three others. When we came up the river, there was a high road. Then I saw a woman climbing up the mango tree picking up some ripe mango, which we ask to have few pieces. Dream comments: none Dream title: Going back in time Dream date: 2/8/05 Dreamer name: Ren Dream text: I went back in time to talk to an actor who I like. I told him I was in the future. He asked me if I could prove it. I couldn't because it would cause a paradox in time. We were in a bedroom and there was a king-sized bed. He was with his girlfriend at that moment. Dream comments: Can you go back in "time" and change things if you know you're dreaming? Dream title: water Dream date: 2-7-05 Dreamer name: anonymous Dream text: I dreamed about I was with this guy I like and he kept rejecting me and coming back. Then all of the sudden we were in a place like the ocean with a huge snake surrounding us. He was drowning and the water was murky. I was looking at him with his family outside. Dream comments: I have dreams related to water often and with him with his family in it. Dream title: FLOOD Dream date: 02/11/05 Dreamer name: BELL Dream text: My two boys, husband and I were climbing up a mountain. There were two pigs in a field as we continued to climb. In the distance we see a house. As we got close to it, we could see it was built with steel and watertight doors. As I went in, I walked up to the second floor. I looked out the window and I could see a large amount of water coming at us. I yelled at my family to get in the house quickly and close the door. The water comes up to the window. I looked out as the water went down and we could see the pigs in the trees behind the house. As we looked out the window in the direction of the water there was nothing left. Dream comments: none Dream title: very strange Dream date: 02/10/2005 Dreamer name: fluffy Dream text: I was living in a nice big house and I was called by my daughter. I went into the kitchen and she was looking outside. I looked out the window and saw two young girls. One was plump and the other was thin and tall. They were running from two bears, the plump girl was ahead of the other girl. She was up some stairs and the thin girl was hanging from the banister. One of the bears had reached out and grabbed the thin one by the face they were both screaming. The thin girl got away but her face was dripping with blood. The bears were pacing back and forth waiting for us to come outside. At that moment my boyfriend called from the back bedroom and asked me what was going on. I told him and he was still annoyed. At that moment the little girl turned into a little boy. Somehow I knew that he was the only one who was able to help us out, and he knew the same. It was raining outside but it was not gloomy out. There were pine trees and a lot of bushes in the yard, with a fence that was covered with bushes. The sun was not out but it was still a little bright outside. Then at that moment the dream changed. We were at the beach and we had walked into an arena. As we walked into the ground floor, we noticed that the people were scared and running. We went up the stairs in a small hallway. A woman and a child ran down the stairs as we walked down the hallway. There was a bear there and he was wounded - he had blood on his belly. Then the bear started to talk to the little boy and said that not all the bears were bad. He also told the little boy that he was the chosen one, who would be able to help everyone out. He had a small pear in his hand that looked so feeble that it did not look as if you could do anything. Then at that moment I saw a man's spirit who was talking for the bear. He was an Indian man in full dress then the dream ended. Dream comments: I have no kids. Dream title: Two headed baby Dream date: 2/12/05 Dreamer name: anonymous Dream text: I HAD A DREAM THAT I WAS PREGNANT, AND WHEN THE BABY WAS BORN IT HAD TWO HEADS. WHEN I WENT INTO LABOR I FELL DOWN A HILL. I WANTED TO CALL MY FIANCE'S STEP-MOTHER TO TELL HER I WAS HAVING A BABY. Dream comments: WHAT DOES THIS DREAM MEAN? Dream title: Church and the Pope Dream date: 02/02/05 Dreamer name: DD Dream text: I enter a church and the Pope is giving a mass. I walk down the aisle and step up onto a piece of metal flooring. There is someone next to me. Although my mind runs through numerous people, I never truly know who it is (I suspect it is Jesus). I start to be raised up as if I am in a cherry picker, higher and higher but I never lost sight of the Pope. I go higher and higher, panicking a little (I am afraid of heights). But since I have someone next to me and that I see the Pope giving his sermon - I am calm. Eventually we stop and I speak with this person next to me. Then we start to come down and I feel oddly relaxed. Dream comments: I am not a very religious person. I was raised RC but have not been to mass in quite awhile. Dream title: Three black roses Dream date: 9/10/04 Dreamer name: NE Dream text: I was sitting at the top of a rock at the beach while viewing the sunset. One guy came and gave me a red rose and said goodbye. After that, I noticed that the rose he gave to me turned black. Another guy came and the same happened. A third guy came and the same happened. Dream comments: none Dream title: Losing my teeth Dream date: 2/13/04 Dreamer name: NL Dream text: I had a dream I lost all of my teeth. Dream comments: Frustrating! Dream title: I won $40 Million Dollars Dream date: 2/2005 Dreamer name: DA Dream text: I had a dream that I had won $40 Million Dollars. Dream comments: none Dream title: Octopus-like aliens Dream date: 2-19-05 Dreamer name: GM Dream text: Last night monsters were coming out from the sky. I was barefoot. I was scrambling through this thrift store for clothes for my son to keep him warm. There were lots of other people hiding under things. Craziness. Dream comments: It was weird. Dream title: Help me Dream date: 2/19/05 Dreamer name: MC Dream text: I was walking down a long hallway and I could hear my voice saying "help me" over and over again. I ran to open all these doors but none of them would open. As I struggled to open the doors, my voice kept saying "help me before it's too late." Dream comments: I think I was asking for help in my dream because I have been under a great deal of stress. I am overwhelmed but I am not sure really about it all. Dream title: Field of yellow Dream date: 02-16-05 Dreamer name: Anonymous Dream text: I was standing along the sidewalk of a yellow flower-filled field, with one hill that seems to be the center of the view. There was one building (barn) to the left of my view, that had a deck in the back with chairs. There were a couple of friends who I knew, but mostly strangers. They all had yellow rain pantsuits on. The thing is that it was not raining or even look like it was going to rain - the sun was shining very bright. Then I went to the front of the building (barn) and a fighter plane flew over. Next everyone was jumped into a white truck which headed up a hill that was now a neighborhood, no longer a field. Dream comments: I would like to know what this dream means. Dream title: Surrounded by Alligators Dream date: Once or twice a month Dreamer name: Liv Dream text: I've had several alligator dreams that have me wondering what they are trying to tell me. Each different, yet similar are about me and people in my life walking outside. We are trying to get somewhere but there are tons of alligators everywhere. In one dream, they were in a field we had to cross; another dream they were in the yard of a house I was planning on leaving. In one dream my boyfriend decided to have one as a pet and it slept in our bedroom. In that dream, I was trying to get to the bathroom without getting too close to the alligator. In all the dreams the alligators are not aggressive, as long as you keep your distance. If you get too close they will try to bite. So, of course, each dream I'm trying to get around them without getting too close. Dream comments: Again, I believe that dreams have meaning. I do not wake up frightened in cold sweats or anything like that. Dream title: Praying angel Dream date: 1994 Dreamer name: HT Dream text: I found myself in a sort of black granite maze, with walls at least 12 feet tall. The place was illuminated by an unseen light source. There was no roof on the maze and all I saw was darkness when I looked up. I stood in a corridor, looking down to what seemed maybe 12 foot by 12 foot, with no exit. The room had a granite altar in the middle. I looked up and saw a majestic angel in white, with a beautiful light surrounding (her)? She gently floated down and began to pray at the altar. I felt as though she was praying for me.
