For those of you who are not familiar with this e-zine, it is a joint project of many online dream groups and individuals. We explore how the dream movement is evolving, especially online, and contribute to its development in our own unique ways. This month, dream scholar Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D., joins us for an Electric Dreams interview about his new book on big dreams. A full spectrum of topics are covered about dreams from nightmares to new theories about sex and dreaming. Kelly is well qualified to speak about all these topics from both personal and academic points of view. Also, Kelly was the first person at ASD to hand out and distribute information about Electric Dreams in 1994! Be sure to read my interview with him about his new book, Transforming Dreams. Probably the most significant interaction we can have with a dream besides being in it, is recording it. Recording dreams is a great way to enhance dream recall, have more vivid dreams, increase chances of lucid dreams and have recorded material for later work, analysis, cross-reference and long term dream series studies. In this issue of Electric Dreams Marc Vandekeere continues his basic steps to lucid dreaming with extensive notes on Keeping a Dream Journal. Be sure to read "Lucid Bird's Words." New this month is a column by Bjo Ashwill. For those of you who have used her dream journaling software "DreamSpinner," you know when I say she is a real expert on recording dreams and has been studying the many different nuances of this area for some time. She has developed the most sophisticated dream journaling software to date and will be keeping us up on this and other topics in the DreamSpinner column. This month: " Working Dreams With The Power Of Computers." Charles McPhee returns to comment on dreams. If you haven't seen his new Dream Doctor site, I recommend stopping by and adding some dreams to the growing collection and special teen section! http://www.dreamdoctor.com Madame Aionia continues to explore the relationship between astrology and dreams in this issue. The Sixth House traditionally includes such areas as work, health, servants, and now employer- employee relationships. Thus we are moving into an individual?s work habits, the situations one is likely to attract to the work situation and one?s attitude toward routines and service. Today?s servants are more likely to be the waiter, the repair person, the toll booth collector, the customer service agent. Health may be seen as the body vehicle of service. Be sure to check out what's in the stars for June dreaming! This is a dreamsharing conference, open to all who want to work with us in a supportive, nonjudgemental cyber-climate in the fascinating and revealing world of dream experiences. Members are free to post dreams they have had, ask general questions about dream-related matters or dream themes, dialogue about any dream on the list, and ask for commentary on their own dreams. People new to the world of dream exploration and experienced dream workers are equally welcome, and it is hoped that our list will grow to be multi-generational, multi- national, multiethnic, and inclusive of people from all walks of life. The original members met on another dream discussion board, are on several different continents, and represent several generations. We hope this diversity will grow. One of my basic understandings of the dream world is that it speaks a language common to all, though we may have a hard time understanding it at times. Although the language we use to describe our dreams, and the images that appear in them, may vary based on our individual and cultural experience, the basic process is the same for all. It is impossible to tell a "housewife" from a doctor from a carpenter from a person who has been identified as a "mental patient" from reading a description of their dreams, unless the dream is focused on intimate knowledge of their waking-life realities. Before you attempt to comment on anyone else's dreams, please keep the following in mind: a) this is a supportive environment, based on the principles of kindness and respect for all. You will encounter people with beliefs, practices, habits, and language very unlike your own at times, both in posting your own dreams and reading the dreams and comments of others. I encourage people not to censor themselves when relating dreams in an established forum, and also encourage people responding to be kind, calm, and openminded. One of the benefits that I have found to doing group dreamwork over the course of many years is that I can find common ground and shared intelligence with people I might have little in common with in waking life. Be courteous (a word that, like "courage", means something of the heart). Take an active interest in understanding how someone whose spiritual beliefs or lifestyle are far from your own is part of the same Big Picture as yourself. b) in the same spirit as the above: Only the dreamer can say for certain what his or her dreams mean. Borrowing from my friend and mentor Jeremy Taylor (whose dream-related website, www.jeremytaylor.com. I recommend strongly to all), I urge all participants to enter the dream world by imagining themselves in the dreamer's shoes, and stating their opinions in the first person as much as possible. For example, I might say, "If this were my dream, the wedding dress might be about commitments I want to make public" when responding to someone's dream about shopping for a wedding dress. c) Clarification questions and dialogue are encouraged. If there is some part of a posted deam that is unclear, or you want to know more about a dreamer's waking life, go ahead and ask, keeping the principles of courtesy and kindness in mind of course. One good thing about e-mail is that we can dialogue rapidly, and are not faced with the time constraints that might exist in a face-to-face dream group. Before you comment on someone's dream, you might want to make sure you understand what it is that you are discussing. d) This needs to be a safe place for all. We all understand that there are privacy concerns unique to the Internet. You may choose to remain anonymous, using only your "screen handle" or you may give your name at your discretion. Please respect the confidentiality needs of everyone on this conference. Don't discuss the people involved with others outside the conference, especially if they are identifiable by name or life circumstance. If anyone outside our membership list is interested in these dreams, refer them to me as moderator. Do not repost anything that appears on this conference, or publish it in any form. Do not post anything that did not originate with you, whether it is a friend's dream or an interesting piece of news. You may reprint published material on dreams as long as the source is credited fully; I will be quoting from Jeremy Taylor and others from time to time, and will refer you to the source and how to order it. You are free to email anyone whose personal address is given as a co-member of Dreamshare, but please respect their needs and rights to decide what mail to receive and to answer. If you decide that this place is not right for you, there will be no offense taken if you decide not to participate. Please don't stick around and post angry "flame" messages, practical jokes (this has happened on othe dream discussions), teases, or any form or harassment or putdown. Life can be hard enough as it is, and people are sharing a vulnerable part of themselves when talking about their dream life. As moderator, I will put my foot down about this sort of behavior. e) I am not a professional psychologist, though I have been working with dreams in depth for many years. This list is for mutual help and enjoyment, and may well have a beneficial effect on your life, but it is not psychotherapy as the term is commonly understood. You are encouraged to consult a mental health professional of your choice if you are seeking such services. Psychotherapists are as welcome as anyone to join this list, as equal members of the Dreamshare group. Everyone needs to understand that this is an egalitarian space in which the validity of someone's opinion is judged by the response of the dreamer and the people reading the dream, and not by credentials of any kind. All participants: please be prepared to be a peer to anyone on the list; this is not a place to seek, or dispense, "expert advice." f) You are not obliged to comment on every dream, to visit or post on the list every day or at any given interval, or to answer a certain number of dreams for each one you post. Likewise, don't become too impatient if there is no response for a while after you post. This is a vulunteer effort, and we are all busy people. It's better to wait until you have the time and opportunity to write a meaningful response than to simply hop in because you feel you "should." You are encouraged to "lurk" in Dreamshare to get a sense of our flavor and style before posting. g) I will be posting suggestions, as we go along, for improving dream recall, working with dreams alone and with other people, resolving some "nightmare" energy and other problems, and related topics. Please feel free to post questions on these issues; there may be some wonderful ideas shared in this way, and it will let us know what others want by way of improving their relationship with their dreams. Again, I recommend, highly, the books and materials available from Jeremy Taylor for a broad introduction to working with dreams and the unconscious; see his website cited above for ordering information, or ask at your local bookstore. h) Finally, I want to encourage you to enjoy your dreams! I regard the dream as a living entity, a visitor that deserves to be treated with respect and gratitude even if it sometimes speaks a language that is difficult to understand. I referred to "nightmares" in quotes above, because I believe it's a mistake to separate and reject the dreams that are powerfully frightening when they occur from the rest of our dream life. The difficult dreams are often those that have the most of valuable of gifts for us. As you continue to explore your dreams, you will come to see beauty and perhaps humor as well as precious guidance in all kinds of dreams. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////// DREAM RESEARCH - please help soon! Lucid Nap Dreams (#577-583) By Barton Santello The following series of dreams occurred during one 10 minute nap at lunchtime. Some are lucid; some not. What is fascinating is the prolific diversity of dream stories in such a short period of time. Dream 577 - Simulating Truck Driving Through the Jungle (Lucid) At one point I was looking inside a truck cab. I started the truck and was feeling the response of the truck as the tires sunk-in and slid along the ground. I could feel the wheels get stuck and the feeling was truly duplicated. I was impressed at the level of realism for a nap. I drove the truck over a hill and it was like I was on a roller coaster ride. I was simulating crashes, nose first, as the truck came down over the hill, without having to worry about getting hurt. Very good realism was displayed when I decided to lose control of the vehicle and crash head-on into something. Dream 578 - Jungle River (Lucid) I was swept down a raging river and then entered calm tributaries. I recall being aware I was dreaming and began to look at all the vegetation; thinking how detailed the jungle and river was created in my mind. I began thinking that this was a fun way to spend my lunch time. Dream 579 - No Escape I'm with a woman. I tell her to pack everything and let's get out of here together. She says that there is no way she can pack up and leave, "What about my daughter?" I put my arms around her and we kiss. My hand goes under her sweater to touch her breast. Out of what seems like nowhere, a voice yells "NEXT!" All of a sudden I realize we're standing in line, at the unemployment office. Dream 580 - Historical Comedy I'm watching a comedy video-tape, several comedians are put in historical situations to see how they would deal with events like "The Last Supper", "Custers Last Stand" and the "Spanish Inquisition." I remember thinking to myself that this would be such fertile ground for a comedy series, if well thought out. Dream 581- Composing (Lucid) I'm composing a beautiful classical-type song. I could hear the music flowing through my head. The song has a melodic quality. A singer comes in only at the very end. I was aware that I was dreaming and couldn't help but think that this is how someone like Mozart must have composed music. Unlike this situation where I have to be in an altered state to have these beautiful sounds come "to the surface" of my mind, so to speak, someone gifted in musical intelligence must be able to produce these sounds at will, probably just as an average person would concentrate and devise a solution to a simple problem. Dream 582 - Cat Cartoon I'm watching an animated cartoon of a "Garfield"-type cat sleeping on the couch. A little girl goes over to the cat. I tell her not to disturb the cat. She does anyway. The cat is startled and jumps straight up. I laugh. Simple cartoon music is playing in the background. Dream 583 - Engineering Consultation (Lucid) I'm in a professional engineers office. I ask the engineer to help out a friend with a problem who's studying for the professional engineer's exam. The man begins flipping through a reference book, marks some pages and hands it to my friend. He says, "The author of the reference book has done all the work for you; these chapters tell you what you need to know." I'm sitting at a desk observing and thinking that I don't know this guy's name. Then I hear my own breathing from the nap I am taking. I become aware that I am dreaming. I begin to think about the engineer dream character, wondering what his "actual" knowledge of engineering really is. He seems so confident and business- like. At this point I'm technically awake just resting with my eyes closed, motionless and quiet from my nap, yet the dream is continuing. Jeff broke my heart and moved away. Since then, I have had very "real" dreams about him trying to come back to me, but in each instance, something keeps us apart. Upon awakening, I have a sense of sweetness, love and joy that is unlike anything I have ever experienced. I am currently happily married to a very wonderful man who satisfies me in every way. So why does Jeff keep coming back to me in my sleep? - Megan, Age 31, Redwood Falls, MN, USA Hi Megan - There's something different about the ones who break our heart... We keep on wondering why, and we keep on leaving the door open - no matter what reality tells us. Why do we do this? Usually it has to do with our own ego. The key factor in the dynamic is that they left us - and not the other way around. They didn't want us. But we still want (need?) the confirmation of our desireability and attractiveness - so we let the "return fantasy" linger. I think your dreams show a fairly realistic assessment of your situation, though - notwithstanding the "return fantasy." In your dreams, something always keeps you apart from your ex. This "something" is the real world. Congratulations on building such a great relationship with your husband. This is a genuine accomplishment. As for your "return fantasy" - I think you may want to let it go. I think you've outgrown it! :-) You can visit Charles McPhee at the Dream Doctor site http://www.dreamdoctor.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The Lucid Bird's Words by Marc Vandekeere =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This month ?The Six Basic Steps to Lucid Dreaming .? Step 3 : Keeping a dream journal The Six Basic Steps by Marc Vandekeere The following is an excerpt from my manual, The Ultimate Lucid Dreaming Manual Basics and Beyond. I hope it can be used to maximize your lucid dreaming progress. If you find this information helpful you may want to check out my lucid dreaming website for further info, tips, resources and more. The URL of my site is http://how.to/luciddream and if you have any questions, feedback or comments, feel free to send me an email. I'm always happy to hear from other dreamers and love to help out. if and when I can, thelucidbird@mediaone.net . Stay lucid. So now we've come to the payoff. In order to make this material more user-friendly, the information has been divided into four categories, and there will also be an summarized outline at the end of the manual. By getting an overview at a glance, it may be easier for you to thoroughly learn, absorb and internalize all the information. Hopefully, it will help tighten all the concepts into one working whole. The Process Section One - The Six Basic Steps Section Two - Other methods Section Three - General tips Section Four - Tools and Tactics All these sections have one objective - teaching you how to become lucid in your dreams. After you've learned the process, methods, tips, tools, and tactics, we'll cover the more advanced techniques that you will need to know once you become lucid. The Process There are many techniques and methods that you can use for inducing lucid dreams, but there are basically two different ways of becoming lucid. You can either have dream-induced or wake- induced lucid dreams. Stephen LaBerge coined the term D.I.L.D. (Dream Induced Lucid Dream) for dreams in which you become lucid while within a dream. By training your awareness, you will somehow realize that you are dreaming while you are dreaming. This is by far the most common way of having a lucid dream, but it is also possible to directly enter a lucid dream from a waking state. These Wake Induced Lucid Dreams, or W.I.L.D.s, are far more rare, but as LaBerge so aptly labeled them, they are quite an experience. While covering the basics we will be dealing primarily with dream induced lucid dreams. When we move beyond the basics, we will be dealing with the more advanced techniques that will include inducing W.I.L.D.s. There are many methods to induce lucid dreams, but there is an underlying process behind most if not all of them. I've broken this underlying process down into six basic steps that will serve as our beginning regime. Once you absorb these steps and start following them, it is only a matter of time before you have your first lucid dream. In case you are wondering how long it will take for you to have you first one, just follow through with the steps and have faith that you will have one. According to statistics, the time it takes for someone to have their first lucid dream averages from three weeks to two months, but yours may be tonight so don't be discouraged if you try for a while and don't succeed. There seems to be an obsession in our society for instant results. If you are one of these people, realize that this is one of your first obstacles to overcome. Only one thing is certain - If you never stop trying, you are guaranteed to succeed. The Six Basic Steps 1) Doing the Mental Prep-Work - see Electric Dreams 7(4) April 2000 2) Increasing dream recall -FOCUS THIS MONTH 3) Keeping a dream journal 4) Becoming familiar with your Dreams 5) Adding Awareness to your Waking Consciousness 6) Linking your Awareness to your Dreams Step Three) Keeping a dream journal The *single most important thing* that you can do to increase your dream recall and to maximize your lucid dreaming progress is to keep a dream journal. This increases your recall by engraining the idea that dreams are important. It also helps you become familiar with your particular dreams, which is the focus of the next step. The habit of writing down your dreams soon becomes a habit of recalling your dreams. If you seriously want to learn to lucid dream, you MUST keep a dream journal. It is not an option. I strongly emphasize this because I know from experience that keeping a journal is a crucial part of the process. I had been trying to lucid dream for several months with little success until I started keeping one. Shortly after I started consistently making my dream journal entries, I began to recall more dreams with greater clarity and detail, and this led to my first lucid dream. Even now after years of lucid dreaming, I still see a significant correlation. If I neglect my dream journal, my lucid dreams become slightly less frequent. All it usually takes is a few days of making entries and I will be back on the lucid track. Here are some tips on keeping your journal. Record all of your dreams with as much detail as you can. Even if something seems trivial, you should still write it down because it may turn out to be significant when viewed in the long run. Write down not only what happened during the dream but also what you were feeling and what you were thinking at the time. These emotional and mental notes will help you later when you are becoming familiar with your dreams. This will also help you see how your daily affairs and your waking mind influence your dreams. For example, you may notice during times of stress that you will have stress-influenced dreams. You may dream of being late for an exam or being unprepared for a business meeting. The point is that your dreams are sending you a message. They are reflecting what you think and feel at a subconscious level. Looking at the patterns of your dreams and examining the recurrence of certain dream themes will tell you a lot about yourself and the areas in your life that need attention. This is yet another reason why keeping your dream journal is so important. It allows you to have an overview of your unique dream patterns which are actually symbolic reflections of an ever changing you. When keeping your journal, it is best to write your entries in present tense instead of using past tense. For example, you would write, "I'm walking down this street and I see a man" instead of "I walked down this street and saw a man." By writing in the present tense, you may be able to remember even more of your dreams as you are recording them. Also, when working with some of the methods we will cover later like dream reentry and dream incubation, it is best to be thinking and recording in terms of now not then. As an added bonus, writing in the present tense makes for better reading when you are reviewing your journal at a later date. With each dream journal entry, you should include a date, a time if you can, and a title for each dream. To find a suitable name for your dream, imagine if it was a movie and choose the most appropriate title. Something simple is usually best as long as it captures the essence of the dream. Anything from "Red ants in a rainforest" to "Class reunion on an airplane" will be fine. If you have several different dreams during the night, it is best to separate and title each one. Mixing separate dreams together may make the dream's message harder to find and may make choosing a distinctive title nearly impossible. The main purpose of titling your dreams is to make them easier to access at a glance when you are looking through your dream journal. Now, if you are like me or like most people, I am assuming one of two things. You are either going to think you can learn to lucid dream without keeping a dream journal or else you will start keeping a dream journal and before you know it, it will be gathering dust next to that book you've been planning on reading for about a year. I say this only because I thought the same way. Not to say that it could not be done, anything is possible, but why not increase your odds, maximize your results, and speed up the process with a proven method. Once you get into the habit of keeping your journal, it will become a daily routine like putting your clothes on in the morning. You just need to do it and consistently follow through with it. Keeping a dream journal is definitely not the easiest thing to do. I have spent many a day thumbing through random pieces of papers scribbled with dream accounts. Although it gets easier with time, in the beginning it may be helpful to follow some of the following pointers. To make the journalizing process easier I have several suggestions based on different approaches I have tried combined with the advice of others. At first glance, it seems like such a simple thing. You dream, you wake up, and you write down your dreams, but there is much more to it than that. For example, when you awaken if you start writing in your journal as you are recalling the previous night's dreams, it is hard to remember everything accurately in the right sequence. You may have already moved on to a new scene but then you remember something you had forgotten. This prompted me to write everything I could remember on a sheet of paper and then after doing this I would write an organized account of it in my journal. This works fine if you have lots of free time but with time being a valuable commodity it is rather inefficient. Along with the difficulty of balancing your time and determining how organized you need to have your journal, another problem you will encounter is the simple fact that you have to do a lot of writing which in itself can become monotonous. The best approach is to recall all that you can in your head before writing anything, but even so you probably will remember more as you are writing. By recording your dreams only on the right-hand pages of the journal, you can write late arriving memories on the left-hand page and conveniently draw an arrow to the portion of the dream in which it occurred. You can also use the left-hand pages to draw pictures of any dream objects or maps of the dreamscape. This tip may require you to buy double the amount of journals, but if you want more organized entries it certainly works. If you do choose to use this method, you should use the left-hand pages to record what you did while awake that day, where you went, who you saw, or any other details of your day. Whether you use the left/right page method or not, you should include this daily information somewhere in your journal, preferably on the same page as your dream entries. This can be very helpful when you are looking for patterns in your dreams. For example, I have found that I will often dream about things I have seen or experienced from two days before or two days after the dream. If I watched a program about natural disasters on Monday, I would not be surprised if I dreamed about it on Wednesday. If I dream about a person who I have not heard from in a while, they will usually call me two days later. I don't know why it happens, but by analyzing my dreams and the journal entries of what I did for the day, I have found this to be one of my dream patterns. Many people recommend using a dictaphone to record your dreams. Upon awakening you can just speak your dreams aloud into the recorder, and enter them into your journal later. I've tried this method and found that for me this is not the way to go. It is not very time efficient. It certainly is easier to record them verbally, but the problem comes when you are transcribing these tapes. It takes far too long to listen to these recordings and write them down in your journal. Also, you still have the problem of trying to keep the dream's sequencing in order and this becomes even more troublesome when using a dictaphone or tape recorder. There are many different styles of journal keeping and everyone may have a natural preference, but if you want to save some time and you have access to a computer than you may be in luck.. Learning mostly through trial and error, I have developed an extremely easy and efficient method. Prompted by the idea of how wonderful it would be if my dictaphone could write up my journal entries for me, I employed the help of my personal computer. There are many reasonably priced speech to text recognition programs available for most home computers. I purchased a program called IBM ViaVoice98 for around fifty dollars. After installing and setting up the program, it will convert what you say directly into text on your computer screen. You can speak at a normal pace and it does all the typing for you. Most importantly, you can use it directly with Microsoft Word, a common word processing program. This allows you to dictate directly into thew word processor and when you are done you can save it as a file and store it in your new computerized dream journal. The speech to text program is by no means flawless, but it works just fine for a dream journal. It may make an occasion error but the journal entries as a whole are relatively legible and the time saved is enormous. Having a few jumbled words here and there is much easier to correct than doing everything by hand. It completely removes the burden of writing down your dreams, and it totally solves the problem of jumbled dream sequences because you can cut and paste any misplaced dream fragments into the appropriate places. If you have the resources, this is by far the easiest and most efficient way of keeping a dream journal. There is also a wide variety of dream journal software available on the Internet and possibly at your local computer store. Two of the better programs available are Awaken98 by Awake-software.com and Alchera Suite 3 by Mythwell.com. They are reasonably priced between thirty to forty dollars depending on the program. These programs can be extremely useful for keeping an organized journal, analyzing your dreams, and cross- referencing past dreams. They have features that allow you to search your journal for particular words. For example, if you were interested in examining any dreams with beaches in them, you could search your entire journal for a keyword like "beach", and the program would scan and retrieve any dream entries that contain the keywords. This can be an extremely efficient way of analyzing your dream patterns. They even contain a feature that allows you to look up the meaning of particular dream images by using a built-in dream dictionary. As you become more familiar with your own dream symbolism, you can even personalize the definitions to reflect your own specific meanings. The wonders of modern technology are beginning to put an end to the paper-based journal. With all the benefits of dream journal software it definitely seems to be the way to go, but there is one problem. I have not found any programs that have integrated the speech to text capability. Since this speech to text method outperforms any other methods I have found thus far, the best way to overcome this problem is to use a dream journal program that can import text like Awaken98. This way you can take advantage of the both benefits. You can journalize your dreams with a speech to text program using your word processor and then copy and paste the text into the dream journal program. Again, if you have access to a computer you should seriously consider incorporating it into your dreaming regime, and if you don't have a computer, you may now have a need for one. NEXT MONTH Step Four: Becoming familiar with your Dreams =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The DreamSpinner Column Working Dreams With The Power Of Computers By Bjo Ashwill http://www.spinner-soft.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Hi, Electric Dreamers. I am Bjo Ashwill and will be writing a monthly column on my experiences of creating a computer software program that does very detailed analysis of dream narratives. You are welcome to visit my web site and check out DreamSpinner, the software program I will be describing. http://www.spinner- soft.com. In this column I shall describe, over time, how to use the computer's power to store, group, analyze and retrieve information from our dreams. DreamSpinner's greatest power is working with long "over time" dream series, although it can work with individual dreams as well. How do metaphor patterns change over time? That is the question that began my journey toward creating DreamSpinner. First, a quick introduction of myself. I am a counselor, a dream worker, a performer, writer and director. I have been interested in dreams all my life. My dad once told me that I used to tell him incredible stories. He now realizes I was describing my dreams to him. Too bad he didn't write them down for me!! In the mid-1970's, I had finished my Master's program in Counseling Psychology, experienced a divorce and struggled with the debilitating results of Rheumatoid Arthritis. My dreams became a stronger fascination for me and I began to consistently write them down. Now, thirty years later, I am the proud curator of over 3500 dreams. The important question became: "How Do I Sort Through ALL that material and make sense of it??" To get people up to speed on what DreamSpinner is all about, I reprint here the original Abstract I wrote for the Berkeley, California ASD conference where I first presented the concept of DreamSpinner. The present day evolution of that program isn't yet capable of all I envisioned. But step by step, it is getting there. ABSTRACT DREAMSEARCH AND THE COMPUTER Presented At ASD Conference, 1996 Dream search has been going on for thousands of years. We peer into our dreams in many different ways and styles. Now the computer is an additional tool we can use to glean those insights. The computer is like a multi-faceted lens. We can choose to move in close and personal, like a macro lens on a camera, examining the fine details, magnified. We can swoop out like a telephoto lens and see the detail in relation to its dream environment. We can even fly up to outer space in a satellite view of the entire inner world picture. In addition we can imitate the workings of our dream creator, Ms. Creativity, Herself, by using the raw material of the dream narrative to break apart, reassemble, and tumble unlike things together. This creates insight as we spin through the mosaic of our lifelong metadream. Jung suggested a 100 dream series to work with when he analyzed someone's dreams. I extend that to every dream a person has recorded. I believe it is all one dream, when viewed from a longitudinal point of view. It is our "body of work" over a lifetime. I began this work in progress computer software package because I kept asking myself, "Didn't I dream that symbol before?" I used WordPerfect 5.1. I recorded my dreams. Then I created some rather lengthy macros to do the tasks I needed done. The centerpiece is the capability of searching all your dreams for a particular symbol and creating a sub file of only those dreams. I added the ability to figure the percentage of times this symbol appears in the total master document. I created my own personal symbol dictionary from the dream narratives which is many times more complete than any symbol dictionary you can buy. I loved the speed with which I could pull together information. If I had decided to check out if I'd ever dreamed about cats before by skimming each dream in my dream journals, I'd still be here working on the first symbol. From this simple beginning, more and more ways to use this information gathering method became evident. When the software package is complete, I will be able to choose many different styles and techniques to view or play with the material. I can use left and right brain techniques, depending on my personal style and mood of the day. The centerpiece is the great search engine. From there you can: 1. Create your own personal symbol dictionary. 2. Create dictionary of different cultural and spiritual interpretations of symbols and words. 3. Count and tabulate the most frequent (chose your own number) symbols in your dreams. 4. Create categories of your dream material. Examples of categories are : male characters, female characters, neutral characters, settings, objects, actions, emotions, colors, etc. 5. Pull together sub files of all the dreams you've ever had with a particular symbol in it. 6. Find dreams where two symbols often show up in the same dream. 7. Do archetype searches. 8. Examine problem solving techniques implied in dreams. 9. Create a time line and examine the changing of a symbol over time. 10. Time line events. Analysis of ages mentioned in dreams. Same age as dreamer, generational (parents) what specific ages of childhood. 11. Tracking special dates like birthdays on a time line. Do I have reoccurring dream motifs? 12. Search out the many faces of the shadow. 13. Create lists. Example: Pull up every "she says" sentence. What is the feminine telling you over and over. 14. Search all the first sentences of each dream. Create theme list. 15. Search all the last sentences of each dream. Create future direction list. 16. Do numerology. 17. And the bottom line: Use the computer to reorganize the material to create new spontaneous relationships with one's own set of symbols. Not only is the information intriguing, but you can then use other techniques to gain more insights. Such as: 1. Dialoguing with dreams characters and images. 2. Describing and doing a character analysis of the dream characters. 3. Placing symbols in relation to each other and exploring what this might mean. 4. Changing the dream. Rewriting it. 5. Do line drawings to depict the dream images. 6. Create a dream. Take sentences of dream and translate into sound and graphics. 7. Look at plot lines of dreams 8. Break dream into specific scenes. 9. Tell the story of the dream in general terms to get the basic plot and structure. 10. Generate list of tasks dreamer can do in waking life. (example: dreams hiding in small place. tasks: stretch body out, make large gestures. get into open large spaces. open something symbolically. declare self.) 11. Like the Make up stories game, leave blanks for adjectives nouns and verbs from your dreamwork to be filled in. 12. Keep a day residue journal. 13. Work dreams from the different perspectives: physical health, sexual, spiritual, work, relationship, childhood events, family, etc. 14. Keeps track of all your dreamwork journaling, connected to the individual dream. This is a partial list of what this computer software can be capable of. People ask, "Aren't you just chopping up the dreams into little pieces?" "Won't that destroy all the built up meanings of the wholeness of a dream?" I must answer yes. I am chopping up the dreams and separating out pieces that were created to be together. The implication I hear in the voices of my questioners is that this destroys any value the dream may have. I disagree. I think it augments what we already are learning from working a whole dream. We are given the gift of a complete dream. The simple act of trying to translate that into language alters it. I honor my dreams as they are. Using the computer to tease out more insights does not take away the whole dream. It still is there. _______________________ This column will discuss the many steps I needed to take to create the current version of DreamSpinner and what fascinating things I learned on this journey. Subjects like: 1. Creating categories. 2. Dealing with left brain computers from a right brain mind. 3. User tips for DreamSpinner. 4. Completing the circle from left brain to right brain and back. 5. Finding the patterns in your dreams with examples from my own dream series. 6. And much, much more! I hope the column will be interactive in the sense that you may have questions or comments you would like to make about your own dream journey with computers. Please email me at dreambjo@hotmail.com with any thoughts, comments, questions or suggestions. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Transforming Dreams: An Interview with Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D. is one of the leading scholars in the field of dreams and dreaming. He is a past president of the Association for the Study of Dreams, teaches at Santa Clara University and has focused on the interplay of dreaming, religion, psychology, and culture. Some of his books include _The Wilderness of Dreams, An Introduction to the Psychology of Dreaming_, _Spiritual Dreaming: A Cross-Cultural and Historical Journey_ and _Visions of the Night : Dreams, Religion, and Psychology_. He is a former President of the Association for the Study of Dreams, and he is Secretary-Treasurer of the Person, Culture and Religion Group of the American Academy of Religion. He is on the editorial boards of the journals Dreaming and Religious Studies Review. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School in 1992, his M.T.S. from Harvard Divinity School in 1986, and his B.A. from Stanford University in 1984. In his latest book, _Transforming Dreams Learning Spiritual Lessons from the Dreams You Never Forget_ (John Wiley & Sons, 2000) , Kelly offers an accessible journey for all dreamers into the world of big dreams, dreams so powerful that they demand attention and refuse to be cast aside as "just a dream". The book begins by taking the reader through the most commonly experienced powerful dreams, such as sexual dreams, nightmares, dreams of death and titanic dreams. Another part of the book offers techniques that are useful for novice and expert dreamworkers, considerations of theories around these techniques and an anthropological overview. [RCW] : (Richard Wilkerson for Electric Dreams) Hi Kelly, thanks for joining us here at Electric Dreams for an interview! [KB]: (Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D) My pleasure! [RCW] : Kelly, I have found all your books written so that any intelligent person can access them. But your current book, __Transforming Dreams_, seems to be a departure from your usually scholarly style of writing with lots of references and really is accessible to a larger public. Was this due to the nature of the material or a desire on your part to reach more people? [KB]: A little of both. I appreciate your saying my other, more academic books are accessible to general readers--that's definitely been my goal. But I've always wanted to write a book that offers new ideas and practical suggestions to people (in or out of academics) who are fascinated, perplexed, and inspired by their most powerful dream experiences. [RCW] : I was particularly pleased with the Nightmare section. They are often made out to be villains of the night, and it's a rare person that would wish to have them, yet they provide us with such great opportunities. I especially liked your observation about how the extreme emotions that come with nightmares offer us a chance to widen our emotional spectrum. When did you begin seeing them as something other than a symptom to get rid of? [KB]: That's one of the many points in the book which is rooted in my own personal experience. My own nightmares, particularly the ones I had in my teens and early 20's, were tremendously important experiences for me in terms of learning about myself and the world around me. I would be a much more limited and close-minded person if it weren't for those nightmares. [RCW] : It must be very hard as a parent to both calm a child that just had a nightmare and validate the dream at the same time. Do you have some simple suggestions for parents? [KB]: It is hard to calm a child who's just woken up from a nightmare, and I tend to focus on comforting first (with lots of hugs, etc.) and then, in the morning, on reflecting on the nightmare's contents. Children seem to enjoy drawing pictures, play-acting, and using dolls or action figures to express their dreams, and with a particularly bad nightmare these methods can help a child put the dream "out there," where it can be more safely discussed, examined, and processed. [RCW] : One of the unique concept themes in your book is about the "realness" of dreams and how this is a key to understanding big dreams. I want to come back to this on a more abstract level later, but for now could you talk about how the realness of the nightmare experience can be an important component in the nightmare being useful to the dreamer? [KB]: What's real about a nightmare is the emotion of fear, and that emotion usually has direct physical accompaniments (sweating, trembling, racing heart, etc.). I tend to see that "realistic" quality of nightmares as a means of emphasizing the importance of whatever the dream is expressing--it's as if the dreaming self were saying, "Here, pay attention to THIS, it's really, really important!" [RCW] : The idea of titanic dreams that go past the organic was quite interesting and not often addressed. Could you describe this a bit to the Electric Dreams readers? [KB]: Well, I have to admit this is a realm of dreaming I do not at all understand myself; all I try to do in the book is report my observation that a rare few dreams seem to have a strangely abstract setting (space, a vast field, pure night), few or no other characters, and a sensation of encountering massive forces, often in the form of geometric shapes (e.g., spheres). It's very hard to put into words, but my guess is that such dreams may (I emphasize may!) be giving us a glimpse of life at a non-organic, atomic level. That's wildly speculative, of course, but I'm very intrigued by these dreams, and I intend to keep studying them and seeing if I can make any better sense of them. [RCW] : I'd like to hear from dreamgroups around the country if they handle these dreams differently than other dreams. I know in my dream groups when this kind of dream comes up that its very hard to relate to and difficult to know what to do with in a satisfying way. Do you have any suggestions for a group approach with this kind of dream? [KB]: I'm not sure I do, because the dreams seem to lead off into realms of existence and the cosmos far beyond our individual human lives. Maybe I would ask why have I had such a dream NOW; is there any value or purpose to my gaining a new view on my individual life in the broader context of the universe? [RCW] : You identified the relief upon awakening from a nightmare as an important piece of the dreamwork not to be neglected. I know when I awake from a nightmare I struggle with wanting to just feel the relief and push the dream away, and yet the desire to recall as many details as possible. Do you have any suggestions for this difficult space? (It's hard to journal when my body is shaking!) [KB]: I have that feeling, too; I sometimes wake up from a bad dream and say to myself, yuck! I don't want to deal with that! I guess it's just the disciplined practice of dreamwork that zeroes in on that reaction and recognizes it as a special opportunity for new growth and insight. [RCW] : I liked the idea that superego visitation dreams, where old authorities and critics come back to haunt us, can be used a value-barometers. How do these dream barometers work? [KB]: One of the many functions of dreams seems to be to check how well our current lives are matching up to the ideals, goals, and values we consciously hold. Sometimes the dreams give us the equivalent of a pat on the back--good job, you're doing great! More often, though, our dreams push us to do better; they prod us to recognize where we're falling short, where we're being hypocritical, where we need to move in our growth and development. Teachers, parents, famous people, even people we don't like in waking life can all serve in our dreams as the voices of new growth. [RCW] : On the section about death dreams you say that "The supreme existential importance of death makes it a perfect symbol for the dreaming imagination to use in conveying a variety of meanings." Can you elaborate a little on this and the notion of "intense memorability"? [KB]: In my research I've found that dreams dealing with death, dying, and people who have died are among the most powerful and memorable types of dreams people ever experience. That's an important fact, and one way of explaining it is to recognize that the cycle of living and dying is fundamental to all human existence; thus, dreaming about death becomes a perfect way of reflecting more deeply on life. [RCW] : I really like morbid topics but others might want to hear more about dreams and sex. You propose a theory that the cyclic REM arousal is a fine-tuning of the workings of the reproductive system. I'm trying to reconcile this with the way that dreams provide us with the most bizarre and unexpected of sexual partners. (at least mine do, hee hee). That is, if the REM arousal cycle is trying to fine tune us, and dreams are trying to widen the spectrum, is there a way to resolve this conflict? [KB]: I see it as a matter of the general function of dreaming and the particular function of dreams. In general, I think dreaming (and the REM arousal cycle associated with it) helps keep our reproductive system is good working order; the regular genital arousal that accompanies REM sleep is an indication of this. Regarding particular dreams which rise to the level of conscious awareness, I think their function is to prompt us to reflect on our waking lives through the lens of our sexual desires. Because dreams are usually trying to prompt us to grow in new directions, the appearance of unusual sexual partners, positions, etc. helps in that process of stimulating new conscious reflection--"Wait a minute, I was fooling around with HER, and we were doing THAT?" Such dreams (which of course have very powerful and realistic sensations attached to them!) are a marvelous way of prodding consciousness to pay attention to something new. [RCW] : Again the notion of intensely memorable experience comes up. Can you talk a little about how this is important beyond the intrinsic pleasure of the moment? [KB]: The fact I focus on is that we forget the vast majority of our dreaming experience. I believe this means that when a dream is so intensely vivid and literally unforgettable, there must be a reason for that. If our dreaming imaginations go to so much trouble to create something that truly burns itself into our memories, we can be sure it's not a random or meaningless event. [RCW] : I have often wondered if the Catholic Church is going to have to change their catechism on confession around dreams. As I understand it, dreams are not confessed because they are seen as non-volitional. The notion of lucid sex re-introduces the will back into the equation. Ah, the problematics of theologians! [KB]: That's a great point! The question of whether people are morally responsible for their (immoral) sexual dreams goes way back in the Judeo-Christian tradition. I think Thomas Aquinas, the 13th century Scholastic theologian and a major authority in the Catholic Church, would probably consider lucid dream sex to be immoral. [RCW] : As dream sharing begins returning to culture as an everyday event, how would you suggest we handle it when other people's children try to share dreams with us with sexual content? Or is dream sharing for kids inappropriate outside of the immediate family? [KB]: I definitely do not think dreamsharing with kids should be restricted to the immediate family, because schools, camps, churches, and peer groups can be wonderful settings for dreamsharing. However, as is true with dreamsharing of any kind, creating a safe, secure, and confidential space is crucial. With children, I think discussions of sexual feelings have to be handled very, very carefully, and that usually means it's best restricted to the immediate family. [RCW] : Like death, sexual dreams are sort of intrusive and offer us a break in the normal flow of life. But unlike death, which is rarely welcome, sexual dreams might be incubated. Still, I think sex is a difficult force to work with and I am usually drawn quickly into unconscious behavior, sort of like Jung's anima possession. The natural aversion of death almost makes it easier to work with. Do you feel that grassroots dream sharing groups should avoid actual sexual encounters in the way therapists must? [KB]: That's an interesting idea that death dreams may paradoxically be easier to deal with than sexual dreams. I share your experience with sex dreams frequently leading into strange behavior--that's what makes them so disturbing, and yet so potentially revealing. Regarding sexual encounters between members of a dreamsharing group, I don't like to automatically apply the standards of psychotherapy to dreamsharing, because therapy is premised on an unequal power relationship and assumes that the client has a problem that needs to be healed; dreamsharing, in my view, depends on an equality of power among the group members and a non-utilitarian openness to whatever comes up in the dreams (whether they relate to "problems" or not). So I wouldn't put the question in terms of "professional ethics"; rather, I'd say it's just common sense morality to use good judgment in not fooling around with people you shouldn't fool around with. To close on a possibly provocative note: if I were feeling a sexual attraction toward a member of a dreamsharing group, I would interpret that symbolically as an expression of something coming up in the dreamwork, rather than a literal desire to have sex with that person. [RCW] : In discussing the difficulties of dream interpretation, I liked the notion of finding a path between babble and blowing the dream away. That is, we can talk too much and we can be overwhelmed and ignore the dream. You seem to define a playful scene of enactment and tolerance for absence of premature closure. Have you named this space? Can you talk about it a little here? [KB]: Well, I don't really have a name for it, beyond "playing"- -that's what I was getting at in my earlier answer, that dreamsharing at its best is playful, not driven by a goal, an aim, a purpose (e.g., "solving a problem"). Playing isn't easy; just watch a group of kids at a park, and you can see how hard it is to generate and then maintain a good, free-flowing game. But once you've got it going, once everyone's creative juices are flowing, then truly magical things happen. That's what happens (ideally!) in a dreamsharing group. [RCW] : Do you feel that new dreamwork techniques will continue to come out, or has the field pretty much gotten the basics already in the techniques that are being used? [KB]: I'm sure new techniques and methods will keep coming. Some of the basic ideas are truly ancient--I still think the second century A.D. Roman dream interpreter Artemidorus laid out the basic program we're all following today in terms of carefully seeking connections between the details of the dream and the details of the dreamer's personal life. But the creative power of dreaming is truly infinite, and so I expect there's no end to the methods people can and will devise to better understand their dreams. [RCW] : I liked that you gave very good examples of how to open up the imagery and push this process through to a new level. That is, not to say "Oh, so that is what the dream is about!". This seems to emerge from your alliance with a teleological perspective. Can you say a little about getting a bearing on a dream's direction? [KB]: I come back to the experience of especially powerful, memorable dreams. My conviction is that such dreams are pushing us to grow and develop, and the effort to interpret these dreams is an effort to discern the direction in which they are pushing us. I'll use a horticultural metaphor: dreams have their roots in our past, but they are flowering out into our future. [RCW] : I have a few questions that Electric Dreams readers always want me to ask about authors favorites: What's your favorite dream, what's your favorite dream book and what advice do you have for people who what to devote there lives to dream studies and dreamwork? [KB]: My favorite dream? Hmmm, well, I love flying dreams, of course, and I deeply value the dark wisdom of the nightmares I've suffered over the years. My favorite dream book--that's a cruel, cruel question! I can tell you that the first books I read that really got me into the whole world of dreaming were Jung's Man and His Symbols and Ann Faraday's Dream Power. It's hard to give general advice about "careers in dreamwork," but I'd suggest that people 1) always stay true to their own dreams, 2) not become too discouraged at the tepid interest many people in modern society have toward dreams, and 3) take a long-term view of building up whatever dream-related activity or practice best integrates their talents, opportunities, and ideals. [RCW] : Then of course, there is the question all author's complain about getting: what's next? What is your next book and project? [KB]: I've got several projects in the works. I've written a science fiction novel, Across a Bridge of Dreams, which I'm trying to get published; I'm working on an anthology, The Interpretations of Dreaming: A Critical Reader in Psychoanalysis, Comparative Religion, and Cognitive Science, and also a textbook on Psychology and Religion which I'm thinking of titling, The Soul, The Psyche, The Brain. I've got a screenplay in the works (that's the "play-time" project!), and I'm continuing my research on spiritually meaningful dreams and on the political dimensions of dreaming. (For readers who would like to help me with the dreams and politics project, please visit my web site at http://www.kellybulkeley.com/idxresearch.htm). [RCW] : I was happy to see that you recommended to people that they actually come online and try out dream work on the Internet before passing judgment. I'm hoping your publisher will allow us to put online your dreamer's utopia statement, which speaks about a time when dreams finally become our companions. [KB]: That sounds fine to me! I'll check with Wiley ASAP. [RCW] : Kelly, thanks for your thoughts and time. I feel the dream field is really quite lucky to have you! [KB]: Thanks for giving my book such a thorough reading, and best wishes to ED readers! ++++++++++++++++++++++ You can order Transforming Dreams online and find out more about Kelly Bulkeley at: http://www.kellybulkeley.com E-mail: kellybulkeley@earthlink.net -------------------------------------------------------------- =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Madame Aionia's Astrological Dreaming Series: Dreaming Through the Houses: 6th House =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Have you ever wondered how dreams and astrology are connected? There are many ways we can connect dreams to astrology, and many don't require that you know all about your Natal Chart. In this column we will be exploring the symbolic rather than predictive aspects of astrology. Symbolic astrology attempts to use the images of astrological to give meaning to one's life and empower choices rather than predict paths. We do this by imaginal overlay. In this process we impleach, (poetically interweave) dream, image, feeling, life and symbol in a way to evoke a felt sense of the dream's imagery and its position in our life. This year we are focusing each month on a different House. The inner circle of the Natal or Birth Chart is divided into 12 distinct regions know as Houses. They relate to everyday activates. One will be about physical appearances and temperament, while another relates to possessions, for example. Planets and signs fall within these Houses and influence the areas of focus. We will be watching for images of planets, signs and other celestial events and hopefully begin to see the emergence of an astrological chart that dips into birth charts, dreams, and our waking life. The Sixth House traditionally includes such areas as work, health, servants, and now employer-employee relationships. Dream: I am in a coal (?) mine and we are sending buckets of rocks up to the next level. I notice one fellow who is weaker than the rest and kind of sneaky and seems to put something other than coal in the buckets. A foreman catches him when a larger worker tilts his head in the little guy?s direction. The foreman doubles the load he must dig and send up to the next level. Dream: I am trying to get the washing machine repair main to fix the washing machine. He continually complains about the color of clothes that are being washed, that yellow clothes clog the machine and should only be used with fabric softener. I ignore his suggestions and ask say its the spin cycle that needs to be fixed regardless of the cloth?s color. His attitude really bugs me and I know he thinks I?m stupid. Dream: There is an assembly line were we have to put several items together to make a musical instrument. Its kind of like a xylophone but different items are used for the keys. I find it odd that there are so many different ways to put the instruments together. We are allowed to let some items go by if we feel someone else needs them. I?m surprised when I see on the assembly line toys from my childhood. Dream: I notice a man working on a train track. He seems to be hammering in spikes, but stops every once in awhile to do something. I see is continually pushing bulges in his body. As one bulge goes in, another seems to pop out. I?m especially disturbed when his head bulges. The first six signs and houses of the Zodiac are often associated with one?s personal development, while the last six are associated with one?s participation in group life. This make the sixth house a kind of turning point. While traditionally it is seen as weak or not very important (*), it may be seen as important in the integration of the first five houses in preparation for the last six and in group life. Work and relationships therein become a symbol of how one has integrated the first houses and is able to use them. Compare, for example, the coal mine dream to the assembly line dream. In the coal mine, there is an unintegrated shadow and a sense that the work is more like slavery. What may need to be integrated is the ego, not the shadow - so to speak. The weak resistant miner shows signs of creativity and may offer some new paths to the dream miner. The assembly line worker also has some stuck-in-a routine issues, but seems better integrated, building musical instruments that include personal items from an earlier stage. The body also is a place of integration. Note that in the Rail worker dream the poor fellow?s bulges might correspond to chakra?s and energy centers in the body. Often when we have earlier issues unresolved they come out during work. Thus sixth house dreams may be a kind of testing and turning point where we can look at the ways in which we work and are worked, our inner and outer habits and patterns and the ways the elements of earlier houses have been integrated. Habits and personalities that may have worked in the family or school may not work so well in the public sphere. Finding ways to express and unfold these personalities will be the work of the next six houses. Note on Virgo (*) This may be due to the interpretations of Virgo, who is connected with this house. Virgo?s virginity is often literalized, thus being seen as a form of naivete and inexperienced and lack of sexuality. However, these interpretations don?t hold up mythologically. The Virgin goddesses were often prostitutes and ruled over the mysteries of sexual union and birth. Later patriarchal pairings gave these goddesses over to various gods and diminished their powers. More currently the virgin goddess has been restored as the feminine archetype that can mate and give birth, but is never fully under the dominion of any male deity or power. M. It will appear as a trade book written for a general audience, probably next year. Shafton is the author of Dream Reader: Contemporary Approaches to the Understanding of Dreams (SUNY Press, 1995) and several articles about African-Americans and Dreams. The main research for Dream-Singers All consisted of over 100 interviews and wide reading of African-American literature, both of which are freely quoted. Shafton's approach is cultural, not psychological. He explores the features of traditional African-American beliefs and attitudes about dreams, and shows how the traditional beliefs are expressed in the present. He also argues that African cultural characteristics and beliefs about dreams have shaped the African-American traditions. Evidence for this contention are found chiefly in the prevalence of ancestor dreams, the belief in predictive dreaming, the openness to dreamlike experiences in the waking state, and the links between dreams and spirituality. Each of these topics is covered in from 1 to 4 chapters. Among the special topics covered are "playing the numbers" from dreams, dreams and deja vu, visions, folk beliefs surrounding sleep paralysis, and patterns of dream sharing. There is also a lengthy chapter exploring dreams in which race is an issue. >>>>>Celebrate Freud's Interpretation of Dreams [Nightmares, Fantasies] WHEN: Monday October 30th, 2000 7:00 pm - the witching hour WHERE: The National Arts Club: 15 Gramercy Park South, NYC 10003; tel: (212)475-3424; subway: N, R, 6 to 23rd St., then walk to E. 20th St. & Park Ave. So. He resigned in 1974 and, since then, has been engaged in extending dream work into the community. In 1967 he initiated one of the first sleep laboratories in New York City at Maimonides Medical Center on 1961, a laboratory devoted to the experimental study of dreams and telepathy. In recent years Dr. Ullman has been in the forefront of the movement to stimulate public interest in dreams and to encourage the development of dream sharing groups. Working with a small group process that he felt was both safe and effective he has spent the past three decades leading such groups both here and abroad, especially in Sweden. We were rummaging through several shops, two in particular. We had gone into the first shop. I hate shopping as my feet get sore when I have to stand still for very long; I need to keep moving. Invariably, I always run circles around B., waiting for him to"move on". He had wandered off and I had circled the store (three times), looking for him. I finally came to a stop in front of the checkout counter and was staring off into space when the check out girl asked if she could help me. I said, "no." As I was about to walk away, she mentioned that she couldn't take care of the incorrect Blockbuster Video billing on our hotel bill. I told her that was ok, that I would contact Blockbuster myself when I got home. They had overcharged us by fifty cents for a rental. I then thought to myself, who goes on vacation and rents videos? I can't find B. anywhere in the store and I come to a staircase. This shop has two floors. I debate going up, as I know there is nothing up there of interest to me (I have a sense of deja vu), yet I proceed to climb the stairs anyway. As I had figured, there is nothing here worth looking at. I walked to the other side of the room and came to the exit. There are three doors. I choose to exit via the middle one. The doors are twice as wide as a normal door and one-fourth shorter and are made of wood and steel. I open it and find that I now have to jump down 4-5 feet to the corridor. I look to my left and see that the first door has steps leading down to the corridor. But, I'm already here and have this door open, so I jump. Now for some reason, I'm walking around carrying a medium sized container of stew; pasta/chicken with homemade bread crumbs (crouton size). I open a door to enter the next shop, only to find it's the kitchen to a restaurant. There is a counter stopping me from passing through. One of the chefs invites me to pass, but I have to crawl beneath the counter to get to the other side. He then pours a ladle of spaghetti sauce over my stew and shows me to the front door. He looks a tad upset as I leave. Perhaps he was expecting me to offer him a taste? Now I've come to the second shop. I wander through the shop, but B. isn't here either. I leave the store and am now outside. Two of the female clerks are outside and I ask them for directions (I don't recall to where). One girl is tall with sandy blonde hair and the other short with brown hair. The taller girl points to the east, the shorter girl to the west. Then the taller girl changes her mind and points north and says that is the way I should go. I look in the direction she's pointing and it's a straight uphill climb. Just thinking about it exhausts me. I start climbing. About one third of the way up, there are three trees in my path. Their roots are exposed and I find myself having to step between the roots. But in a way, that's a good thing, as I am able to get a better foothold and this invigorates me. Once I get past the trees, the path turns to dirt. I make it to the top and the path leads me to the door of a house. As I stand on the threshold, I hear someone coming and step away, to the right of the door. A young girl comes out. She knows where I want to go and says she will lead me. All I have to do is follow her. I guess a lot of people come to the door instead of staying on the path to the right of the door. The phrase, "And a child shall lead them," pops into my mind. The girl is about six feet ahead of me when I call out to her to stop. Just to the right of her, I spy something. "There's a rattlesnake. Step away from it, slowly," I call out. The snake was coiled up, napping. The girl bent down and picked it up. She had no fear of it, in fact, seemed delighted to find it. I hadn't realized it before, but she already had another snake wrapped around her neck. It was a large snake, like a boa constrictor. She took the two snakes in her hands and flung them to the right of her, into a pile of more snakes. The area was fenced off, as if meant to keep the snakes inside. Then we continued on our way, up the dirt path which was surrounded by trees on either side. Walking uphill again, all you could see were trees and sky. My friend Alicia fell off the stage and so Chris (my ex boyfriend) and I took her to the hospital. And then tthe dream just went to the next day where my other friend Mary and I were shopping for bridesmaid dresses, because Chris and I were getting married in a few days. After we were done shopping Chris and I went to his house and I was talking to his mom about the wedding plans. Then Chris and I were in his room and we were talking about all the things that he has done to hurt me, and he was apologizing for all the stuff that he had done. We then decided to walk to Mary's for some reason, but I was barefoot and so Chris decide to carry me piggy back, we hung out Mary's for a while and then It was the next day which was our wedding day. I was all ready for the day except for my hair wasn't done. I was running around looking for the lady that was supposed to do my hair and I couldn't find her at all, but the rest of her family was there because her husband was walking me down the aisle and her little girl was one of my flower girls and her little boy was my ring bearer. I was freaking out because my hair was a mess and it was standing straight up, no matter what I did it wouldn't do anything but stand straight up, and so then we got married and that was the end of the dream. Comments by Dreamer This dream is totally outrageous because I haven't dream of my ex boyfriend in quite awhile. I know I've been analyzing this dream to death all day, but it has been the most vivid dream I've ever had since I was eight years old and had the dream of flying and driving. But anyways, here it goes. They say that everyone has two dreams a night. I know I had two dreams, but I couldn't remember the first one. It was the second one that got to me anyways. Ok, I am in the school but it doesn't seem like the school except for where the tech lab was. I remember that we were all there except Papa and that there were 3 squares in the middle of the floor somewhat distant from each other. They were squares of ice. The part from which I remember the most would have to start off with I think I was in a room, but there were three bodies on the ground and they were all bloody. There had been three deaths in the school. Murder, or suicide I didn't know which one. I remember that people had removed the bodies and there was a pitiful stain of blood on the tiles. I! ! t seemed kind of gray and gloomy. What bothered me was that everyone acted like it wasn't anything big. There was a lady; I think she was in charge of handling the 'deaths'. I asked her why they weren't going to shut down that part of the school, and she replied, it's just a little blood. I specifically remember a large porcelain sink, three of them, all lined up together with stainless steel taps. They looked like basins. When she said that, I knew something was up. I also knew someone was beside me. He looked like the hall monitor in our school, but he was a man and a bit taller. I thought I'd said something to him, but as I type I realized I didn't speak to him at all. He followed me around giving me the creeps. I pretended to ignore him, but I knew he was there. We got out of the room and instead of being at the third floor where we were, we were on the main level at the back of the school where the staircases that lead to the adult center were. Where we played truth dare.! ! What was different was that it was a subway station that looked a bit like the old train stations from like the thirties. I had this vibe. I looked at the subway and knew something was going to happen with it. I looked up and saw a clock. I turned my head and felt the fear. It was odd. It was wrong. It was real. I think I talked to that guy, but I don't remember saying anything to him. The subway was about to leave when a loud alarm went off. My defenses kicked in, but I was paralyzed. The next thing I remember was seeing myself sitting in the train, as I was outside watching. The train, which seemed to be crashing into a wall, crumbling, crushing into itself actually wasn't. There were screams, so many bloody screams. At that point, I knew fear. I had never really feared anything before this, but this was of a different fear. This was a powerful fear. This fear did not exist in our world. This was the fear of hell. I was in hell. Whether there was fire or not, this was hell.! ! I turned around and was now facing the guy that was with me and not the train. I still heard the screams. I still felt the fear. The ground started to rumble a bit. And in my ignorance and stupidity I started to jump up and scream ' I knew it, I knew it! I knew something like this was going to happen'. The scariest part was this. I was facing the guy. He looked at me, blank faced. Lifted me up, both hands at my waist. I saw someone walk past me and it had a human body. It turned to face me and had the face of a monster. It did a kind of roar, and I was shaken. It walked away. I thought he was going to bring me over to somewhere safe, but I was too fixated on his eyes. There was something in them, something that shouldn't have been there. Uncertainty. He had no emotion but a thought. What he thought is hard to explain but I knew what it meant. I said something I shouldn't have said. I said something wrong. I said something that I wasn't meant to know. I was evil; I was to be r! ! id of. I did not belong. What did I do? I was paralyzed again and allowed him to lift me. Looking into my eyes, and myself returning the gaze. He threw me into it. Into the hell into the bottomless pit of screaming, painful, agonizing screams. I still looked at him as I fell. I felt myself fall. I did not try and move. I let it be all the while thinking why did he push me? What did I do? How could he do this to me? What was it I said? I woke up paralyzed for about half an hour continuing to fall. I felt the fear. It was the most vivid next to his eyes. His cold blank eyes. His uncertain look. His flinch as I said it. WHY?!!! What did I do??!! I've been spending all day analyzing this. I have nothing more to say. I thought it was important I do this though. I may find some answers later. I must find the meaning. Comments by Dreamer PLEASE EMAIL ME ALL COMMENTS.. He never talks, just looks at me & smiles. In this particular dream I had last night, it was my turn to die! My family knew it & so did my friends. They were all waiting for me to arrive at the funeral parlor. I saw myself laying naked on a gurney with a mortician standing over me prepping me for my funeral. I was alive though! I watched him fix my makeup, hair, & nails. My skin started to get cold. I didn't understand why it was my turn to die. I saw myself praying in the dream, asking God why I had to go, why it was my turn? I had asked God for a sign to let me know everything was going to be ok, then I saw my brother, he just smiled never saying a word. After seeing him, I felt like it was ok to die, I didn't need to be afraid anymore. The irony here is, all throughout this dream, I kept waking up. I remember looking around the room & petting my cat. While I was awake, I was still dreaming. I would fall back to sleep and the dream would still continue. Morgan Date of Dream Last week of April, 2000 I have had dreams about my teeth falling out and general problems with my teeth and gums for quite some time, but especially recently, they have become more vivid and a little frightening at times. In one particularly vivid dream, I was going about my normal daily routine, but slowly my gums swelled so much that my face became distorted and I actually felt pain in the dream. This sticks out in my mind as I don't usually feel pain in my dreams. Not all of these sorts of dreams are this extreme- sometimes I can have just a tooth ache and sometimes my teeth or a tooth will actually fall out. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?? I have looked in lots of books etc, but they all say that I need to go to the dentist. I go once a year and I brush my teeth regularly, so I really don't feel it could be that. Suddenly I had a sore ankle and, seeing a red medical cross on the side of a building, entered to see the doctor. A smiling white-haired man and a young nurse greeted me and seated me in an old room full of ancient medical equipment. The nurse tapped my ankle and it started to bleed. She used gauze to stop the bleeding. I felt a freezing sensation move from my ankle up my whole body till I couldn't move. The doctor passed me an ancient shoe box and told me "You really should experience this. This box contains the remains of a child that died a hundred years ago. Hold on tight to the box or he'll get angry." I held onto the box while a nearby cupboard opened and wind began to encircle the room. The chair lifted off the ground, into the air, went outside the building, turned me upsidedown and then landed me back where I started. I still clutched the box, saw the doctor's smiling face and as I woke up, it took me about five minutes until the feeling returned to my body and limbs. I felt terrified. So I kept on driving and there were three sick children laying on the road dying saying "help us", but there was nothing I could do. Date of Dream 17 February 2000 My dream seemed to be set about 100kms from where I grew up - I know the area well. Sort of set at a national park entry gate but no fees were collected and the gate itself was set about 20kms further along the road from where the real gate is actually situated.. The gate itself was like the classic stone crennellated castle watchtowers that you see - with little murder holes more like windows at the bottom and a bigger viewing port half way up the top. Attached to that was a stone cabin/cottage where people could just go in and sleep and cook food - like a house....and it was surrounded by forest on one side and pasture on the other. Although that did change so that when I went around to the cabin - it switched from pasture to forest. I drove up and got out of my car and walked up to the tower. While I was wandering around trying to work out where to pay my entry fee, a bunch of young people - in their 20's came and started cooking and setting u! ! p for the night in the cottage. Funnily though - although the dream was set here - the surroundings were a conglomeration of this and another place I spent quite some time - happy time - at more recently but is clear on the other side of the state. The Watchtower was run by a father of three children. The father was no-where to be seen throughout the dream although I know I loved the children's father deeply and I also loved the children deeply. I knew the children in the dream - but I didn't. And it was these three children - A girl about 8, a little boy and another very quiet little girl - who were running the tower this particular day. After a while -a conversation, showing me around the cottage etc. the little girl said okay now we can go and see daddy. No mention of getting money from the arrivals was made and I did mention this to the 8 year old and she looked at me oddly and said that no - we don't take money - we just make sure people arrive alright. Those ! ! weren't her exact words - I can't recall them that well. But it was as if the 8 year old was the important factor in the family....almost as if it was she who was there to make sure people arrived. At some stage the dream switched to another town - on the other side of the State - but yet - everything was still the same. The placement of things. It was a place where I'd spent a lot of time with a man and his daughter in real life - both of whom I loved and still do love, dearly but which is now filled with memories of times past. It also seems as if it's part of another two dreams I've had before....like a chapter in a book although in the other two there was fear (the first) and confusion and sadness (the second). This one left me feeling - confused - but peaceful - happy and waiting for the next big chapter in my life. In the months since the dream - which I wrote down immediately upon waking - I've remembered other little details - and am waiting to dream it again. To me it was a very important dream - that I have as yet to totally grasp the meaning of. Comments by Dreamer night of 16th Permission to Comment yes_share_comments Permission Comments Feel free. I partied like everyone else, then some people came and began to shoot at us. The boy that I like and went out with a few times ended up getting shot in the back. I covered his wound and called a cab to take us to the hospital. He was very close to death, but I continued to assure him that he would be okay and he stayed alive. Anyways, he hated me and kept me tied to my bed in my room and didn't feed me a lot. One day I escaped and he didn't know. I went straight to a television station and told a reporter about my ordeal. I went back that night and he realized that I had escaped and he was REALLY mad!! I had him trapped behind a door, but he was really strong and got out and started chasing me. He had me from the back and started cutting me with a pizza cutter and it hurt a lot. I freed a hand and started hitting him back but when I looked at what I was using to hurt him, I saw that I had a spatula in my hand. Then I woke up. He has a house out in the country; a very peaceful setting. I don't know what country or city the house is located in. His house has three bedrooms and is contemporary in style. It reminds me a lot of Ikea (the furniture). Felicia is in her room, working (writing) on something. JD is elsewhere in the house. I'm outside, sitting in the car (small, silver, 4 doors) which is parked at the edge of his property, on the dirt road that runs in front of it. The car has a bunch of our belongings in it, as if we were going to take a road trip. I'm afraid to leave the car because, what if someone comes along and steals our stuff out of it? I went back into the house and find they're still busy doing whatever, not ready to leave yet. I then went back to the car and am sitting in the back seat when I turn to look out the rear window. I see a plane coming in for a landing. It's one of those huge jumbo airbuses (like the kind they take overseas), mostly red in color. The plane is 500 feet or less off the ground. JD's house sits to the north and the plane is headed west. I believe the airport is to the south. As I watch the plane coming towards me (west, the direction the car is pointed), I see it descending, then the pilot pulls up and then it comes down and then up again, like a rollercoaster ride, until it finally crashes in the field of a farm house across the road (behind me - east). I jumped out of the car, unable to believe my eyes. I had watched it fall, yet hoped there would somehow be no crash. As the plane disappeared from my view behind some rolling hills, the wait until it hit the ground seemed interminable. It's truly like they say, it's as if you're watching it in slow motion. Then finally, smoke and fire ascend toward the sky. I'm sorry the plane crashed, but I'm also sorry for the owner of the farmhouse. His property is so breathtakingly beautiful. He's got one of those old French farmhouses in a truly idyllic setting. JD came running out of the house. I ran towards him, past a pile of brush that had recently been cut down and I yelled, "a plane just crashed." Matter-of-factly, he said, "I know. Angels did it." At first his statement seemed shocking, but then it began to make sense to me. Angels work for God and do his bidding. Then again, there are also'bad' angels who work for the other side. I ran into the house. Felcia was now sitting on her bed, talking on the phone. I wanted to call the TV stations to tell them what happened, plus, I never have a camera when I need one. I cried to her, "People are dead. A plane just went down." She continued talking, like it was an everyday occurrence. Some of them found me some Wolf's Bane. A number of women walked in and changed from "ordinary attire" into full on Goth. They were trying to see if I would where a pentacle around my neck, or get a tattoo of some sort, but I was not willing to do so. A little boy with me had a tiny cat, which escaped from his sight, so a group of us, - two witches fully made up, a man, and some children, went off in search of this tiny cat. At one point I could see and feel it moving in a plastic tube filled with liquid, being propelled downwards. It was out of my reach. We all waited at the end of this tube, in an old house bereft of furniture. The man went into another room ahead of us. The tiny cat had become a huge tiger, that somehow thought the man was a danger to the little boy with the rest of the group. We heard a scream and went around the corner. The tiger had something gooey on its claws. It took a moment to realise that it was licking unravelled innards/bowel of the man. The tiger moved into another darkened room. All over the floor were lots of raw sausages, which presumably had once been this man. Later, not knowing what to do about the man and the tiger, we all tried to escape by going to our secluded house in the woods that was a secret between a small group of us. Inside the house, there was a sense of warmth and accepting love. Somebody set up a small radio station in the kitchen near the door; the rest of us tried to keep quiet as another of our friends who was a gay man from another country, sang beautifully into the microphone. We were in another room looking at the yellow pages to decide what to have to eat, or to go and do later. It was only when one of the visitors had to leave that we went outside and saw that the house looked rickety from the outside, but it was high up, and required stairs, on one side to get down to a road, or a hill on the other side, which we had yet to explore. Comments by Dreamer the tiger was very orange. One of my dreams was at my house. Well, I guess at my own house in the future. The dream just popped up all of a sudden, because I was dreaming of something else. He just rushed me with passion and I went with it with ease, like I wasn't scared to do it, but wanted to instead. The thing is all my dreams are different places, like his room now, because he lives with his parents or just different. All my dreams of love making with him never got to the point of intercourse. The last time I drempt it, it got close. Sex is also not mentioned in our relationship, so I couldn't be dreaming about the day I spent with him. We also never had sex before. We've been in this relationship for 2 months, but we dated 2 years ago and broke up a month later because he moved to California. I also had a couple of dreams where he just left me by myself without saying anything. Sometimes he see! ! ms like he cares about me and then for a while he seems like he doesn't care at all. He drives me home and stuff though and I hope that he is the right one to stay with. Comments by Dreamer Sometimes I wake up before the dream can go further. In addition, sometimes the water is clear & beautiful like Cancun but other times the water is dark & dreary. But the common denominator is "Waters". Through the years I learned to understand the meaning of my dreams. But this time why this type of dream keep occurring every day almost and for such a long time. Mike, the guy i like, comes walking up the stairs with a rope around his neck. he doesn't seem to notice it either. i don't want his head poping off so i run to him and i tell him not to move otherwise his head will pop off. even though it doesn't sound too realistic, he believes me and hugs me and thanks me for saving his life. while i am in his arms, i feel very light-headed and i feel like my arms and legs feel like bowling balls. and i slide down his body while still holding on in fear of losing him. i look at his white shirt and i read "lake isle country club" where ! ! he works as a lifeguard in the summer. i don't actually let go but at the end if my dream, there i am sitting on the floor facing outward, holding onto his leg and i see my mom just standing there in front of the stairwell screaming at me to get up. then i notice, that that part wasnt a dream, that was my mom actually screaming at me to wake up. She walked out fine but when i emerged my arm was in a lot of pain (my left arm). All of the sudden her boyfriend appeared and felt my arm, he said it was broken in two places and we had to get to the hospital. In a flash we were there and i was in the waiting room still holding my arm. I was then transferred to a bed and as the doctor applied the first strip of plaster the coldness woke me up. When I woke up I realised I had been sleeping on my left shoulder and was holding my left arm up as it was in pain and I was olding it up the exact way I was in my dream Comments by Dreamer Permission to Comment yes_share_comments --------------- DREAM dream-flow.v001.n311.2 --------------- From: Anonymous Subject: Little Rodent Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 21:11:55 -0700 Dream Title Little Rodent -tracy Date of Dream 5-24/night The dream is always different, but there is a hamster in it every time. I carry this hamster in an old metal lunchbox with me to school. I spend most of my time paying attention to the little guy and when I have to run out to do something I place him back in the box. He is a brown little tiny hamster that fits in the palm of my hand. He scampers around and likes to play. When the dream ends he is usually in my hand or in the lunch box. Comments by Dreamer I really don't understand this dream. I have been having dreams about this hamster for the past couple of nights. The first had to do with my boyfriend of three years (who I was apart from for the last few months, but back together with now), coming to me and saying that he had gotten another girl pregnant. I hate babies and the thought of pregnancy altogether, so this really disturbed me, and I was screaming at the top of my lungs in the dream, saying 'how could you do this' and 'I hate you' to him. In the second dream, I was in a dirt lot, arranging stones for a landscape or something. I went into a garage to get a spade, and when I looked on the top of a cabinet for it, my beloved Labrador Retreiver was up there, cold, stiff, and dead. In the third dream, I was in a house with a young boy, probably about 6 or 7 years. I was dusting the mantle and talking with him, when a look of horror came over his face. He was looking towards the hall, and there was a woman, holding a piece of paper against the wall with one hand, and witing on it with the other. He said 'but my mommy's been dead for over a year'. I said 'let's get out of here', and we ran out of the house into a wheat field next door. Then my alarm went off.
